This position is open to either:
A competent and experienced Human Factors professional, ready to take a lead in developing and embedding HF across our operations; or
A motivated individual with relevant background, who is committed to developing into a Human Factors role through structured, fully funded training.
What you will do
You will support the UK business by embedding Human Factors principles across a range of operations, with a focus on improving safety, reliability, and human performance. Key responsibilities include:
Developing Human Factors Integration Plans (HFIPs)
Conducting Human Factors screening and task analyses
Supporting design and assessment of safety-critical procedures
Supporting process safety HAZoPS, LOPAs, FMEA and associated processes
COMAH Safety report maintenance
Maintenance and development of industry best proactive human factors standards and guidance documents
Contributing to incident investigations with a human error focus
Supporting compliance with Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) Regulations 2015
Assisting in the development of Human Machine Interface (HMI) and alarm handling strategies
Promoting best practice in Human Factors Engineering across all UK operations
Development Path
If appointed in a development capacity, you will undertake a formal postgraduate qualification in Human Factors, Ergonomics, or Human Factors & Organisational Psychology. Tata Steel will support your training with paid study time and tailored professional development plans.
What you will need
We welcome applications from candidates at two levels:
1. Experienced Human Factors Specialist:
Degree-qualified in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, Engineering, or related field
Chartered or working towards chartership with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics & Human Factors (CIEHF)
Proven experience applying Human Factors in high-hazard or safety-critical environments
Deep understanding of:
UK Health and Safety law (especially COMAH Regulations 2015)
HSE guidance (e.g., HSG48, RR216, Human Factors Roadmap)
Safety-critical task design, workload, communication, and organizational culture
2. Development Candidate:
Degree or strong background in Engineering, Manufacturing, Psychology, HSE, or Process Safety
Demonstrated interest in Human Factors
Willingness to pursue formal qualification and professional membership (CIEHF)
Strong analytical, communication, and learning skills
All Candidates Should Ideally Have:
Understanding of Human Factors in industrial or safety-critical settings
Familiarity with Human Reliability Analysis (HRA), Critical Task Analysis (CTA), and safety assessment methods
Ability to work independently and manage own workload
Commitment to continuous development and organisational improvement
