to lead our UK-based customs operations. This role is responsible for ensuring full compliance with HMRC regulations and all relevant UK and international import laws post-Brexit. You will manage a team of customs specialists, oversee import declarations, and liaise with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the timely and compliant importation of goods into the UK.
Key Responsibilities: Team Leadership & Management
Manage, coach, and develop the import customs team to meet operational and compliance targets.
Allocate workloads, monitor team performance, and drive continuous improvement in customs processes.
Customs Compliance & Operations
Ensure accurate and timely submission of customs declarations in compliance with HMRC and UK Border Force regulations.
Oversee classification of goods using the UK Global Tariff (UKGT) and apply appropriate commodity codes (HS codes).
Keep up-to-date with changes in UK customs legislation, trade agreements (e.g., UK-EU TCA), and customs simplifications.
Process Management & Documentation
Ensure accuracy of import documentation including commercial invoices, packing lists, import licenses, and certificates of origin.
Work with freight forwarders and customs brokers to manage the clearance process.
Maintain detailed and accurate customs records for HMRC audits and internal controls.
Stakeholder Engagement
Act as the main point of contact for customs queries across internal departments (e.g., Procurement, Finance, Logistics).
Collaborate with external partners including freight forwarders, customs agents, and regulatory bodies.
Audit, Reporting & Risk Management
Prepare for and manage HMRC audits, ensuring all records and systems are audit-ready.
Monitor and report on duty spend, import volumes, compliance metrics, and potential cost-saving opportunities.
Identify and mitigate customs compliance risks and escalate issues as necessary.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in International Trade, Logistics, Business, or related field.
Minimum of 2 years' experience in import customs operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.
Strong knowledge of UK import regulations, HMRC guidelines, and customs procedures.
Experience with customs declaration systems (e.g., CDS), UK Trade Tariff, and understanding of INCOTERMS.
Working knowledge of Free Trade Agreements, Rules of Origin, and Post-Brexit trade requirements.
Excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills.
High attention to detail and strong organisational skills.
