Join Island Bikes: Entrepreneurial Bike Mechanic (Commission-Based Only)
Island Bikes is one of East London's go-to spots for bicycle repair and servicing. From classic road bikes to modern e-bikes, we handle it all with care and precision. But we're more than just a repair shop. We're a growing community hub with an event space and a Wellbeing Club that runs weekly cycling, gym, and running sessions. It's a place where bikes meet culture, creativity, and community.
We're now looking for an
experienced bike mechanic
-- not just someone who turns up to fix bikes, but someone with the confidence and leadership to help run a workshop. Ideally, you'll have previous experience managing or helping to run a shop, and be ready to take ownership of this space.
The Role
This is a commission-only role for someone who wants to build something for themselves while being backed by a supportive brand. You'll have the freedom to run the workshop your way, and you'll be treated like a business partner, not just an employee.
Earnings
You'll earn
50% commission on all labour
, giving you the opportunity to earn well above the average wage for mechanics -- especially during busy periods. The more you put in, the more you get out.
Marketing Support
You won't be on your own when it comes to getting bookings. Island Bikes will actively support you with
marketing, local outreach, social media promotion, and in-store traffic
to help keep a steady flow of work coming in. From digital campaigns to community events, we'll be pushing to keep the workshop busy.
Labour Rates (Your Cut is 50%)
Safety Check: 50
Deluxe Service: 120
Ultimate Service: 180
You'll also earn commission on smaller jobs like punctures, upgrades, and part installations.
Working Hours
Minimum 5 days per week, 10am to 6pm
You can take on more days or extend your hours if you want to earn more
Some Sundays and late appointments available depending on demand
Responsibilities
Carry out full bike assessments with customers
Deliver repairs and services to a high standard
Keep the workshop clean, organised, and stocked
Accurately manage parts and inventory
Deal with customers professionally
Bring new ideas to the table and take initiative in the day-to-day running of the space
What We're Looking For
At least 2 years of hands-on bike mechanic experience
Experience managing or helping to run a bike shop or workshop
Strong technical skills and problem-solving ability
Comfortable working independently and owning your space
Entrepreneurial mindset -- this role rewards drive and initiative
Cytech qualification is a bonus but not essential
Friendly, reliable, and genuinely passionate about bikes and community
Location
Island Bikes
5B Chimney Walk, Stratford, London, E15 2TP

introducing yourself, your experience, and why this role excites you. Keep it casual -- we just want to get a sense of who you are. You can also email your CV or a short message if you prefer.
Please don't pop into the shop to discuss the role -- we're a busy space and won't be able to accommodate walk-ins.
We're building something special here -- and we're looking for the right person to build it with us.
