Supported by the Infant Feeding and Nurture Team, you will be based on a Maternity ward in St Michael's Hospital, providing breastfeeding peer support to parents of new babies, and encouraging nurturing relationships.



This role requires a Breastfeeding Peer Supporter qualification from one or more of the following: Bristol City Council, North Somerset Council, South Gloucestershire Council, Barnardo's, and/or the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM). Equivalent knowledge and experience of infant feeding support may be considered.



Based on a Maternity ward, you will be providing breastfeeding peer support to parents of new babies. Supporting and encouraging parents in the immediate postnatal period and helping them to understand the needs of their new baby/babies. Encouraging responsive and nurturing relationships. Providing a listening ear and company for mothers/parents who would like it. Responding to visitor and patient queries within the limitations of your role. Occasional handling of babies to promote the bonding and closeness of mothers and babies, and to empower mothers to care for their babies. Deferring clinical queries, concerns, or feedback to the maternity staff on the ward, or the Infant Feeding and Nurture Team. Helping to prepare parents for discharge home with their new baby/babies by signposting to community services, i.e. Breastfeeding Peer Support Services and groups, Children's Centres, and Family Hubs.
