What's your mission?
As an Infrastructure Apprentice, you will gain hands-on experience supporting the design, delivery, and maintenance the infrastructure across the business. Reporting to the Infrastructure Team Lead, you will work alongside experienced engineers to build on your existing technical foundations and develop practical, real-world infrastructure skills.
You will work towards a recognised Level 4 Infrastructure / Networking qualification, with 20% of your working time dedicated to off-the-job learning. The apprenticeship will typically last 18 months to 2 years, combining structured study with practical experience.
This role is suited to someone who already has a foundational understanding of IT infrastructure, such as basic knowledge of networking, connectivity, routers and switches. This experience may have been gained through previous study, a completed Level 3 ICT apprenticeship or other formal IT training. What matters most is your technical grounding, curiosity, and motivation to develop a long-term career in infrastructure and managed services.
What will you be doing?
You will support the Infrastructure team with day-to-day operational and project-based activities. No two days will be the same, and your responsibilities will include:
Learning how infrastructure components such as servers and networks are installed, configured, and maintained, while supporting senior engineers
Shadowing and assisting senior engineers with connectivity, routing, and switching activities
Supporting the monitoring of infrastructure systems to understand performance, availability, and security
Assisting with basic troubleshooting tasks and escalating issues appropriately
Supporting routine maintenance activities, including patching and upgrades, under supervision
Gaining exposure to infrastructure projects and service improvement work
Assisting with asset management tasks, including hardware tracking and documentation
Supporting backup, recovery, and business continuity activities as part of the wider team
Learning and following security, compliance, and change management procedures
Keeping documentation and records up to date under guidance
As your experience develops, there may be opportunities to support planned maintenance or incident response activities outside of standard business hours.
What do you need?
To apply for this apprenticeship, you will need the following characteristics:
A genuine interest in IT infrastructure, networking, and connectivity
Strong verbal and written communication skills
A logical, structured approach to problem-solving
The ability to work accurately and follow technical processes
A willingness to learn and develop your technical capability
The ability to work effectively as part of a team
A full UK driving licence, as travel to different sites may occasionally be required
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A-C, including English and Maths Foundational knowledge of IT infrastructure concepts such as networking, connectivity, routers, switches, and basic troubleshooting
This knowledge may have been gained through:
+ A completed Level 3 ICT / IT apprenticeship
+ A relevant college course, degree, or postgraduate qualification
+ Formal IT training or structured learning Good working knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Curious, motivated, and keen to build technical expertise
Task-oriented with the ability to take ownership of assigned work
Strong attention to detail
