Working with the Group Head of Tax in managing all taxes across the group, where tax includes all taxes that the Group suffers or incurs on its operations, as well as taxes that it collects on behalf of governments, such as employment taxes, by ensuring that the principles and objectives set out in the Group's published Tax Strategy and the accompanying Tax Procedures Manual are adhered to and achieved. This includes a commitment by the Group to being a responsible taxpayer, being straightforward and transparent on all tax matters and acting fairly, responsibly and with integrity in all dealings with tax authorities, whilst also recognising that the Group has a responsibility to protect shareholder value by controlling and managing its tax liabilities.


The role involves significant tax advisory work particularly on corporation tax (CT) but also across the full range of other taxes that impact the group including VAT, employment taxes and operational taxes and reporting, as well as developing a strong and proactive relationship with HMRC.


This is a visible role which involves regularly interacting with, influencing and advising senior colleagues across the group, whether on structuring of supplier contracts so as to mitigate contractual and tax risk, how tax impacts project economics, tax considerations on wider corporate activity, as well as on a range of other matters.


The role is also important to the group's relationship with tax authorities, ensuring that HMRC are dealt with openly, honestly and pro-actively and that the group's behaviours are in line with what HMRC expects of banking groups governed by HMRC's Banking Code of Conduct.

Responsibilities:



Ensuring the principles set out in the Group's published Tax Strategy and the accompanying Tax Procedures Manual are adhered to by ensuring the Group pays the tax it is legally required to pay and complies fully with its tax obligations in all territories in which it operates; and ordinary commercial transactions are structured, with clear and unambiguous legislative support, so that tax liabilities are controlled and minimised. Working with the Group Head of Tax in ensuring tax advice is provided on all corporate transactions that the group undertakes, in particular, investments, divestments, corporate reorganisations, funding transactions and alterations of capital structure. Ensuring tax advice and support is provided to the business units on commercial and operational transactions that business units may undertake, such as, property transactions, supplier contracts, employee rewards (including share schemes) and that tax is factored into project economics. Keeping appraised of developments in tax law and regulations that affect the group and to ensure business units are advised accordingly. Managing and taking responsibility for the group's CT compliance process to ensure the group complies fully with its CT obligations, including CT returns, loss and other relief planning, CT and bank surcharge payments on account. Where required, advising on, and reviewing, prior to submission other tax returns that group companies are required to submit. Researching and interpreting complex tax legislation particularly in relation to CT, but also across other taxes, and providing advice to senior leaders across the group and other stakeholders on tax implications for business decisions. Taking responsibility for, and managing the process for, ensuring tax entries/journals for group entities, and associated tax disclosures are prepared, reviewed and commented on. Taking responsibility for ensuring entity tax entries are consolidated for the purposes of the PFG group financial statements, providing tax disclosures and reviewing and commenting on other tax aspects of disclosures in the PFG group financial statements.

o Ensuring that the policy on dealings with tax authorities, as set out in the Tax Strategy, is adhered to, by ensuring that tax authorities are dealt with openly, honestly and pro-actively; including, providing full responses to HMRC enquiries on a timely basis, dealing with HMRC pro-actively and working alongside the Group Head of Tax to ensure contentious issues are raised at the earliest opportunity.o

Ensuring the Group's low appetite for tax risk is adhered to by working with the Head of Tax to establish and maintain policies and procedures to prevent and control tax risks across the group.

This includes:

Working with the business units to develop and maintain robust systems, processes and internal controls to ensure the correctness and completeness of data which needs to be captured and treated correctly in the various tax reporting and payment of taxes that the group is required to make. Working with the Head of Tax to develop policies and procedures which support the management, mitigation and control of key tax risks. Working with the Head of Tax in ensuring the Group's zero-tolerance approach to tax evasion and the facilitation of tax evasion is embedded into policies and reasonable preventative procedures.

Experience required:



experience as a senior tax manager (or experienced manager) gained ideally from working in an in-house function in financial services or, failing that, in the profession. Excellent tax technical skills particularly in CT but ideally also across a range of other taxes. Understanding and knowledge of the range of tax issues faced by banks and financial service businesses. Ability to identify and advise on an extensive range of different tax issues across a wide range of taxes impacting the group, particularly on CT, but also VAT, employment taxes, stamp duties, and operational taxes (including withholding taxes). Ability to carry out in depth research and interpret complex tax legislation and provide advice and guidance to senior leaders and other stakeholders on tax implications for business decisions. Sound judgement and understanding of when external advice might be required to supplement internal advice, and when issues need to be escalated to the Group Head of Tax. A good understanding of the causes of tax risk, identifying tax risk and how to mitigate it. Being able to present and articulate the group's position to HMRC both in meetings, presentations and written correspondence. Excellent tax technical skills across a range of different taxes, particularly CT In-depth understanding and knowledge of the range of tax issues faced by banks and financial services businesses Ability to identify and advise on an extensive range of different tax issues across a wide range of taxes impacting the group, particularly CT, but also a sound awareness in other areas including VAT, employment taxes, stamp duties, and operational taxes (including withholding taxes) Sound judgement and understanding of when external advice might be required to supplement internal advice, when issues need to be escalated to the Group Head of Tax A sound understanding of the causes of tax risk, identifying tax risk and how to mitigate it. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate, often on very tax technical matters, with people at all levels across the group Ability to influence and challenge constructively, within peer group and at more senior levels Adaptable, flexible and able to cope in what is often a pressured and fast moving environment where advice is required at short notice Ability to lead, coach and mentor junior team members and delegate effectively Able to work under own initiative, with minimal supervision, but also a team player who recognises and embraces the importance of team collaboration Rigorous attention to detail Excellent project management skills Pragmatic and commercial Keen and enthusiastic with a real desire to make a difference Strong A level grades (predominantly As/As)
Degree or equivalent (at least 2:1) ACA and/or CTA qualified (preferably both) roles should include working as a tax senior manager or experienced manager (at least 3 years in role), in a similar team in the financial services industry (or failing that the profession) with extensive knowledge across a range of taxes particularly CT, but also other taxes Experience working in an FCA/PRA regulated business
