International Clinical Fellow In Oculoplastics & Ophthalmology

Job Description


The Ophthalmology Fellow position is a one year post January 2026-January 2027, to allow a senior trainee exposure to oculoplastic surgery, while further refining their skills in general ophthalmology and cataract surgery. The degree of responsibility given to the appointed doctorwill be commensurate with there experience and supervision will be available from the clinicaldirector of the oculoplastic service, and the clinical director & consultant ophthalmologists in the Hospital Eye Service.
The Victoria Eye Unit was formed in August 2002 following a move to the new County Hospital from the dedicated Victoria Eye Hospital in Hereford City. The Victoria Eye Unit is the OphthalmologyDepartment at the Wye Valley NHS Trust and is based in the Eign Suite outpatients department. The Ophthalmology Department has the largest catchment area of any department within the Trust andthis is currently approximately 230,000.
Main duties of the job
The following paragraphs and outline timetable are to be regarded purely as an example and the precise duties and timetable will depend on the experience of the person appointed and as agreed between the Trust and the appointee.

  • The Consultant with whom the appointed Fellow is working will be in overall charge of service and will allocate duties and responsibilities depending on the experience of the appointed doctor.
  • The appointed Fellow will work in hospital and community clinics within Herefordshire, Shropshire and Powys and see new and old patients, as required.
  • There will be no regular on-call duties but opportunities may arise for on-call duties to be carried out in the event of leave.
  • The appointed Fellow undertakes, exceptionally to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
  • The appointed Fellow undertakes exceptionally to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally roistered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.
  • The appointed Fellow is expected to keep up-to-date with current clinical practice, and may make arrangements to attend local departmental teaching meetings where these fit with their timetable and duties. The appointee is also expected to attend national and international meetings to update on general ophthalmic and in particular oculoplasticsurgery

A timetable will be built upon appointment, depending on skills and experience of the individual, needs of the department, and the number of sessions contracted for. Applications will be consideredfrom candidates wishing to work full-time or part-time and the programme will be modified accordingly.

Essential Employer details
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Experience in a wide range of Ophthalmic activity Postgraduate qualification in general ophthalmology
  • Postgraduate qualification in general ophthalmology
  • A minimum of five years since obtaining a primary medical qualification or equivalent gained on a flexible basis
  • Independent in phacoemulsification to a high standard
  • Ability to work/operate unsupervised and perform cataract surgery independently
  • Experience working in a busy department
  • Experience in and participation in audit
  • Ability and willingness to teach junior staff
  • Acceptance that the post requires a strong service commitment
  • Must be able to demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust's Values and Behaviours
  • Must be eligible for the RCOphth Dual Sponsorship programme (with appropriate sponsors identified)
