Ios Developer

London, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

Join our team at the Guardian and be a part of a diverse and inclusive global organisation that delivers fearless, investigative journalism, and holds power to account. Our team of award-winning journalists, cutting-edge commercial professionals, and industry-leading digital experts are committed to making a difference and represent a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. We offer a challenging and exciting environment for career development, with a focus on training, growth and fostering an inclusive culture.

We are now looking for an iOS Developer to join the Guardian's product and engineering team. Our award-winning iOS application is primarily created in Swift and Objective-C. We're focussed on providing a fast and stable experience to our users, and our App Store rating of 4.8 stars is testament to that.

Development of digital products is central to the Guardian. You could be building the products that showcase our progressive and independent journalism, crafting the tools that journalists use to write their stories, developing the services that allow those stories to be distributed across the globe, or safeguarding our financial future.

Please visit our Guardian engineering site which contains information and a blog about working in the Product & Engineering department.

About the Role

You'll be building and testing major new features, as well as improving and maintaining existing functionality. Our programming language of choice is Swift, but with 30% of the codebase in Objective-C, you'll be working with both languages on a regular basis. You won't be coding in isolation - our culture is strongly collaborative, whether pair programming with other developers or working closely with designers, editorial and commercial colleagues. You'll have a voice in all big decisions the team makes. Sometimes deciding what code to write is as hard as writing the code itself. As an engineer you'll be involved in product decisions as well as technical ones. You'll be reviewing the code of other engineers to ensure we maintain our app's high standard. You'll strive to be innovative on a daily basis, as well as at our regular hack days. For example, a recent hack day saw the iOS team develop a new home screen widget using SwiftUI, which has now been shipped to the App Store.

About You

You are a creative problem solver who loves technology. You may love the news or you may want to reinvent it. You take an interest in why we do things, and you're able to focus on delivering value for your team. You are, or aspire to be, an expert in iOS development and you have a strong interest in growing your skills. You can make intelligent choices regarding what technologies to use and when to use them. You have personal or commercial experience building and deploying iOS applications. You care about code style and quality.
We operate in a hybrid environment, our developers/engineers are in the office for 1 day a week and work remotely for 4 days. If you want to come in more than that, that's great too.

We strive for transparency in remuneration. The salary for new Apps Developers at the Guardian is 62,000 per annum.

We value and respect all differences (seen and unseen) in all people. We aspire to have inclusive working experiences and an environment that reflects the audience we serve, where our people have equal access to career development opportunities, their voices are heard and can contribute to our future. We actively encourage applications from people of all backgrounds. Many of our staff work flexibly and we will consider all requests for flexible working arrangements.
