Applications are invited to work in the Neurosciences Department at King's College Hospital, for a minimum period of 6 to 12 months



King's is one of the largest Neuroscience centres in the UK with a national and international reputation for excellence. The neurology and stroke team comprises 30 Consultant Neurologists, 18 Specialist Registrars, 9 SHOs/JCFs. The successful applicant will form part of the team.



The post holder will be responsible for delivering care to the neurology inpatients, including acutely unwell patients in a hyper acute stroke setting and will spend time on both the neurology inpatient wards and hyper acute stroke ward. Out of hours they will cover both neurology and stroke patients

The JCF posts rotate between the hyperacute stroke service and neurology service



Hyperacute stroke unit



The JCF will take part in the day-to-day running of the hyperacute stroke unit including patient assessment, physiological monitoring and initiation of acute interventions, liaison with Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery, Vascular Surgery and Rehabilitation. He/she will be a part of the thrombolysis service. There will be a regular commitment to the assessment of acute stroke patients in the Emergency Department and possibly undertaking thrombolysis after training. The JCF will participate in the daily morning review of patients with Neuro-radiologists, and midday multidisciplinary meetings with the nursing and therapy.



Neurology



The JCF will take part in the day-to-day running of the neurology unit including patient assessment, physiological monitoring and initiation of acute interventions, liaison with Neuroradiology, Neurosurgery and Neurophysiology. The JCF will participate in the morning daily review of patients and multidisciplinary meetings with nursing and therapies. There are ample opportunities to perform lumbar punctures, skin biopsies.



There is a joint out of hours rota covering both hyperacute stroke and neurology.



The JCF will also participate in clinical governance and other audits on the unit. In addition, the JCF will be encouraged to participate in ongoing research on the unit and provide undergraduate teaching as appropriate. King's College Hospital has an active educational programme, which the JCF will be expected to attend. These include weekly grand rounds, stroke and neurology specific teaching, neuroradiology meetings and various other teaching and training programmes within the Trust including MRCP teaching.



Applicants are expected to participate fully in the departmental neuroscience training programs. This post is not recognised for training purposes but our Trust grade doctors have the same educational and training opportunities as training grade doctors.



This post will provide experience to those considering a career in acute medicine, neurology, or related disciplines. The JCF will have an educational supervisor and be expected to meet with their educational supervisor to discuss training and service objectives at the beginning of the appointment and then at regular intervals to ensure that these objectives are met. Several JCFs in this post have subsequently successfully applied for IMT training
