Junior Product Engineer

Croydon, ENG, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

This is an entry level technical position aimed at candidates keen to develop or grow their programming and technical skills within a fast-paced supportive environment.

About us

Pet Proactive is rapidly growing data analytics and insurtech (insurance technology) business on a mission to improve pet health in the UK and beyond.

Our business model is unique. We partner with outstanding independent vet practices and leverage their medical records to price pet insurance for their loyal customers. This 'local pet insurance' drives data analytics capabilities which we can share with the vets to support their businesses and clinical activities.

Pet Proactive was founded in 2019 when our founders, Elizabeth and Alex, set out to
re-imagine pet insurance to provide complete certainty of cover to customers. Over the next two years, they designed and built a data analytics and insurance platform from the ground up. Since then the business has expanded to over 150 veterinary sites around the UK and Pet Proactive processes data on over 1.5 million cats and dogs.

We are now looking for an exceptional Product Engineer to join our friendly,
multi-cultural team of animal lovers who are experts in analytics, customer service, technology and insurance.

Could this be you?

About Analytics

We provide our vet partners with their own private data analytics hub - we call this 'Analytics'. The Product Engineer sits in this vet-facing data analytics team.

Analytics is:

a bespoke ETL system to load, enrich, standardise and store a copy of pet medical records from the vet. a Python data model to allow technologists to walk through, explore and report on the data. a series of APIs to allow other components access to the data.
The most important extracts from Analytics are 'pricing matrices' which we use to train machine learning models to price insurance products.

We also use software libraries ( e.g. seaborn, matplotlib ) to produce a detailed visualisations from the data.

There is a separate, customer-facing insurance platform which manages the process of pricing, issuing and managing insurance policies and claims. We call this 'Insurance'.

Our Software

All of the software at Pet Proactive is bespoke, written in Python. We use PyCharm as our IDE and Git for source code control.

Analytics integrates with third party APIs to manage communication using telephony, text messages and email. We also use partnership APIs for payments, document generation, and accounting in other parts of our platform.

We host our software on Google Cloud Platform and use a variety of their serverless components.

We use a wide variety of software frameworks and APIs across our Analytics platforms including Flask, SQLAlchemy, scikit-learn, and pandas.

For office productivity our digital desktop and telephony leverages Microsoft Office 365 but we also use components from Google Workspace.
