Job Description

We are seeking a highly professional and experienced Kirundi Interpreter to provide accurate, confidential, and impartial interpretation services between Kirundi and English. The interpreter will play a crucial role in bridging communication gaps in public service settings (e.g., legal, healthcare, social services) and/or commercial environments across the UK.

Key Responsibilities



Accurate Interpretation:

Provide accurate and complete interpretation in both consecutive and simultaneous modes (as required) between the Kirundi and English languages.

Maintain Impartiality and Confidentiality:

Adhere strictly to a professional code of ethics, including maintaining impartiality and ensuring the absolute confidentiality of all assignment-related information.

Contextual Awareness:

Interpret accurately, conveying the tone, context, andnuance of the original message, including understanding and explaining colloquialisms or culturally specific phrases.

Public Service Interpretation (PSI):

Work in sensitive and often challenging environments, such as police interviews, court hearings, asylum/immigration tribunals, medical appointments, and social services meetings.

Remote Interpreting:

Confidently and competently provide interpretation via telephone and video conferencing platforms.

Preparation:

Conduct necessary research on assignment-specific terminology, topics, and names (e.g., medical, legal jargon) to ensure preparedness.

Professional Conduct:

Maintain a professional demeanor and excellent customer service in all interactions with clients and service users.

Required Skills and Qualifications



Native/Full Fluency:

Native or near-native fluency in Kirundi and full professional fluency in English (both spoken and comprehension).

Experience:

Proven professional experience as an Interpreter, ideally within a Public Service Interpreting (PSI) context in the UK. Candidates without formal qualifications but with extensive, demonstrable professional experience may be considered.

Cultural Competence:

Excellent understanding of both UK and Kirundi cultures and societal norms to facilitate effective cross-cultural communication.

Legal Eligibility:

Must be eligible to work in the UK (Freelance/Self-Employed status or permanent contract eligibility).

Security Clearance (Essential for PSI):

Must possess or be willing to undergo an

Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

.

Communication Skills:

Exceptional listening, memory, and concentration skills, with a clear and professional speaking voice.

Technical Proficiency:

Competence in using remote interpreting technologies (e.g., video conferencing software, telephone systems).
Job Types: Part-time, Freelance

Pay: 15.00-20.00 per hour

Expected hours: 2 per week

Work Location: On the road
