Kitchen Assistant

for The Bridge SEN School (a division of Right Support Management Ltd.)

Report to:

Senior Leadership Team

Liaise with:

Staff and Students.

Purpose of the Role



The Kitchen Assistant will support the efficient operation of the school kitchen, ensuring that high standards of hygiene, food preparation, and service are maintained at all times. The postholder will assist in preparing and serving meals to pupils and staff, including those with special dietary needs, and contribute to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive dining experience for all learners within the SEN school environment.

Key Responsibilities



Assist in the preparation, cooking, and serving of nutritious meals in line with school menus and dietary requirements. Support the Chef in ensuring that meals meet health, safety, and nutritional standards. Help prepare and portion food for pupils with specific medical or sensory dietary needs, following individual care plans where applicable. Set up, clear, and clean the dining area before and after meal service. Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment, ensuring all are stored properly after cleaning. Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in all food preparation and storage areas in accordance with Food Hygiene Regulations. Receive, check, and store food deliveries, ensuring that stock rotation and temperature checks are carried out as required. Report any defects or concerns regarding equipment, supplies, or hygiene to the Catering Manager promptly. Work collaboratively with teachers, support staff, and therapists to ensure the mealtime experience supports pupils' learning, independence, and sensory needs. Follow all safeguarding procedures and maintain awareness of pupils' specific needs and vulnerabilities during meal times. Participate in relevant training, including food safety, health and safety, safeguarding, and first aid as required.

Person SpecificationEssential Criteria



Experience of working in a kitchen or catering environment. Knowledge of basic food preparation and hygiene standards. Ability to follow instructions and work as part of a team. Good communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and young people with additional needs. Understanding of health and safety and manual handling procedures. Flexibility and reliability, with a positive and caring attitude.

Desirable Criteria



Experience working in a school, care, or SEN environment. Basic Food Hygiene or Level 2 Food Safety certificate. Understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures. Awareness of special diets, allergies, and nutrition in educational settings.

Additional Information

Contract length: 12 months

Pay: 25,500.00-26,000.00 per year
