WHAT TO EXPECT

The Laboratory Leader is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of all EMC UK Laboratories, in order to control the materials quality of machining operations, and supplied products.

The role leads the laboratory team to support plant operations in line with the engineering derived control plan. This involves working with production operations to create world-class, consistent & standardised control methods, as well as ensuring those methods are implemented on a day-to-day basis. The main driver is to eliminate risk to customers through material or cleanliness failures, especially of internally machined and assembled components.

The Laboratory Leader should have an understanding of materials testing technology and works to ensure JLR Powertrain Operations is following or establishing industry best practice, in order to safeguard the continued durability of JLR Powertrain, as well as providing a failure analysis and process development service.

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Accountable for the SQDCPE of Plant Quality Materials Laboratories.
  • Manage the laboratory team of associates and assist the laboratory Metallurgist & Engineers with technician training and recruitment activities.
  • Manage and review all laboratory related Materials Standards, Work Instructions and Procedures in line with the business quality system (QOS and DRIM).
  • Work alongside the Materials Engineer to introduce new testing methodologies, where applicable.
  • Support development and implementation of control plans with regard to materials testing.
  • Responsible for implementing and integrating effective data management and reporting for materials and cleanliness measurement processes between the laboratory and machining/assembly lines.
  • Liaise with test equipment suppliers and CME process engineers, to focus on productivity and quality improvements. Ensure improvements are fed back to other JLR engine plants worldwide, where applicable.
  • Ensure consistent delivery of safety targets through proactive application of; hazard spotting, near miss reporting and a disciplined approach to accident reporting and risk assessment.
  • Report data using Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
  • Maintaining and ordering equipment & spares, to ensure continuity of equipment availability.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential
  • Knowledge and practical experience of materials testing, familiar with ISO, ASTM etc standard methods.
  • Supervisory experience
  • Understanding of automotive systems, practices and procedures (APQP, MSA, FMEA, PPAP, ISO 17025, ISO/TS 16949, ISO 18001, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Risk and COSHH Assessments
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines in a high-volume production environment
  • MS Office skills - experienced using Excel, Word and PowerPoint
  • There will be the occasional requirement for UK and international travel to other JLR sites, as well as component and equipment suppliers for short durations as demanded by the role.
Desirable:
  • Educated to at least HNC/HND level in a Mechanical or Science related subject (or equivalent).
  • Experience in Cleanliness testing.
  • Working knowledge of precision machining and materials processing technology.
  • Six Sigma Green/Black Belt.
