Job Purpose



To provide technical support for the Science Department, ensuring that practical lessons are prepared, delivered, and maintained to a high standard. The postholder will play a key role in supporting teachers and students in their learning by maintaining equipment, preparing materials, and ensuring health and safety standards are upheld in the laboratories.

Key Responsibilities



Laboratory Preparation & Support



Prepare, set up, and test practical experiments, apparatus, and equipment for A-Level Biology, Chemistry, and Physics lessons as required. Assist teachers and students during practical sessions by providing technical support. Clear away equipment and chemicals safely after lessons and restore laboratories to a safe condition.

Health & Safety



Ensure compliance with COSHH, CLEAPSS, and school health and safety policies. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safe laboratory practices and advise staff and students where appropriate. Conduct regular risk assessments for laboratory activities and equipment use. Safely store and dispose of chemicals, biological specimens, and hazardous waste.

Equipment & Inventory Management



Maintain, repair, and organise laboratory equipment to ensure it is in good working order. Keep accurate stock records of chemicals, consumables, and equipment. Place orders for new materials and equipment in consultation with teaching staff, ensuring value for money.

Administrative & Departmental Support



Support teachers with administrative tasks relating to practical work (e.g., preparing experiment worksheets, maintaining records of practical activities). Assist with the organisation of science enrichment activities, open days, or science fairs. Contribute to the effective and smooth running of the science department as part of the technician team.

Person Specification - School Laboratory Technician



Qualifications and Training



Minimum of A-Level qualifications in Science subjects (or equivalent). Degree or higher qualification in a science-related field - desirable. Evidence of training in laboratory safety (e.g., COSHH, CLEAPSS) - desirable.

Experience



Previous experience as a laboratory technician in an educational setting - desirable. Experience handling chemicals, biological specimens, and laboratory equipment safely. Experience supporting A-Level science practicals - desirable.

Knowledge & Skills



Good understanding of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics practical techniques at A-Level standard. Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation (e.g., COSHH, CLEAPSS guidance). Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage time and resources effectively. Ability to follow instructions and work independently as well as part of a team. Good IT skills for record-keeping and administrative support.

Personal Qualities



Reliable, proactive, and enthusiastic about science education. Attention to detail and high standards of accuracy in work. Legal right to work in the UK is compulsory Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with staff and students. Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. Willingness to undergo further training and development as required.
