Job Purpose:



To provide a high standard of laundry service for residents by ensuring all clothing and linen are cleaned, dried, ironed, and returned promptly and hygienically, contributing to the overall comfort and dignity of residents.

Key Responsibilities:

Laundry Services:
+ Collect, sort, and process residents' clothing and linen in line with infection control and care home procedures.
+ Operate washing, drying, and ironing machines according to manufacturer and care home guidelines.
+ Identify and treat stains and perform minor repairs when needed (e.g., sewing buttons).
+ Ensure personal items are correctly labeled and returned to the appropriate residents.

Hygiene & Safety:
+ Maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the laundry room at all times.
+ Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control measures.
+ Handle soiled and contaminated laundry in accordance with health and safety policies.
+ Ensure laundry chemicals are stored and used safely and appropriately.

Record Keeping:
+ Keep basic records of laundry processed or items sent out for external cleaning, if applicable.

Teamwork & Communication:
+ Work closely with care staff to coordinate laundry needs for residents.
+ Communicate any lost, damaged, or unlabelled items promptly.
+ Report any faults or maintenance needs in equipment to the appropriate person.



Person Specification:



Essential:

Good attention to detail and ability to follow procedures. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Physically fit to carry out manual work, including lifting and standing for long periods. Basic understanding of hygiene, health, and safety practices.
Desirable:

Previous experience in a similar role, especially in a care or healthcare setting. Understanding of dementia and the importance of personal belongings to residents.

Key Responsibilities





Laundry Collection & Sorting
+ Collect laundry from resident rooms and communal areas.
+ Sort laundry by color, fabric type, and washing requirements.
+ Identify delicate or special-care items for appropriate handling.




Washing & Drying
+ Operate washing machines and dryers according to care labels and infection control protocols.
+ Ensure appropriate detergents and settings are used for each load.
+ Separate contaminated or soiled items for special cleaning procedures.




Ironing & Folding
+ Iron clothes and linens as required, ensuring they are presentable and wrinkle-free.
+ Fold and prepare items for return to residents or for use in the home.




Labeling & Distribution
+ Ensure all residents' clothing is clearly labeled to prevent mix-ups.
+ Distribute clean laundry to the correct residents or storage areas promptly.




Equipment Care & Maintenance
+ Clean and maintain laundry equipment regularly.
+ Report any equipment faults or malfunctions to the supervisor promptly.




Health & Safety Compliance
+ Follow all health and safety guidelines, including proper handling of biohazardous laundry.
+ Wear appropriate PPE and maintain high hygiene standards.
+ Comply with COSHH regulations when handling cleaning chemicals.




Teamwork & Communication
+ Work collaboratively with housekeeping, care, and nursing teams.
+ Communicate any missing or damaged clothing to the relevant staff.
+ Support smooth operation of the home by responding to urgent laundry needs.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise





Essential Skills:



Attention to Detail
Able to notice and handle delicate fabrics, stains, or damage to clothing with care.
Time Management
Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively to meet daily laundry demands.
Manual Handling Skills
Comfortable with lifting laundry bags, standing for extended periods, and using laundry equipment safely.
Organizational Skills
Efficient at sorting, processing, and returning clothing without mix-ups or delays.
Teamwork and Communication
Able to work as part of a team and communicate effectively with care staff, residents, and supervisors.
Basic Sewing/Mending (Desirable)
Capable of performing simple repairs, such as sewing on buttons or fixing small tears.

Knowledge:



Laundry Procedures
Understanding of appropriate washing, drying, and ironing techniques for various fabric types.
Infection Control
Knowledge of infection prevention protocols, including handling soiled or contaminated laundry.
Health & Safety
Familiarity with COSHH guidelines and safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Confidentiality and Respect
Awareness of the importance of maintaining resident dignity and respecting personal belongings.
