About the role
The Telegraph are looking for a highly creative and accomplished visual storyteller to work as part of a team creating visual experiences across our digital platforms and social channels, as well as supporting our journalism in the creation of artwork and visual processes to continuously improve and enhance our storytelling tools in the newsroom.
As part of your role you will lead and manage other designers focused on visual storytelling, overseeing and setting direction for a team that has ownership of three key design areas including weekly and longer term needs within the newsroom, as well as to supporting and leading particular special and bespoke editorial projects.
You will be keen to lead through action, encourage experimentation, and have an expert eye for strong impactful visuals that elevate and enhance the journalism, with a sensitivity to how best to tell the story that will be engaging for our readers.
Key Responsibilities

  • Leading a team who are creating visual experiences and artwork in an innovative and highly creative manner
  • Develop and maintain an industry-leading visual approach across all platforms
  • Work on ambitious special projects, pushing the industry standard longform design experiences beyond the everyday to award winning storytelling, competing with global publishers
  • Creating visual journalism with \xe2\x80\x98concept as king\xe2\x80\x99 mentality. Understanding the sell of a story and being able to execute well throughout ideas to a high level of digital production
  • Working to fast-paced deadlines, leading across a number of different platforms including our website, newspaper, apps
  • Collaborating with multiple design teams and editorial desks including Product, Graphics, Video Editors, Editors and Journalists to brainstorm and storyboard stories for the broader news agenda
  • Working closely with other teams to bring stories to life in highly visual format and experience
  • Leading motion projects alongside senior motion creative and presenting to Deputy Creative director and stakeholders
Essential Skills
  • A mastery of Figma and Adobe CC (in particular Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects)
  • Experience managing a team of designers \xe2\x80\x93 or assembling teams for specific projects \xe2\x80\x93 you\xe2\x80\x99ll understand how to drive projects through to completion, give really good feedback and clarity of direction
  • Ability to clearly articulate and pitch ideas in an engaging way, to clearly illustrate how you would approach projects and how they should be executed
  • Interested in current affairs and have a passion for telling stories
  • Thrive in a fast-paced environment, leading multiple teams
  • An expert level set of design skills \xe2\x80\x93 exceptional typography, an eye for colour, and be fiercely creative with it
  • Energetic, have an appetite for experimentation and a good sense of fun
  • An open-minded and receptive approach to innovating and iterating your designs
  • Experience leading projects and teams
  • 4+ years in-house/agency experience
  • Confident and great at communicating
  • Significant professional experience as a Lead Designer or Art Director
  • Have proven experience leading multiple projects and teams
  • Have significant proven in-house/agency experience
  • Thrive in a fast paced environment, leading a small team
  • Be confident and great at communicating
  • Have an open minded and receptive approach to innovating and iterating your designs
  • Art school/University background (BA or Master level)
  • Have an outstanding portfolio of projects you\'ve worked on, either individually and as part of a team.
  • An excellent understanding of typography, colours, usability and accessibility.
  • Have a clear vision and editorial awareness.
  • Have the ability to animate as well as design
  • Have an active set of animation skills/knowledge and be fiercely creative with it
  • Be interested in current affairs and have a passion for telling stories
  • Know how to create a consistent visual language that is beautiful, stylish and recognisable for the entirety of our customers\' experience.
  • Be able to keep editorial objectives and the \'bigger picture\' in mind when designing.
  • Have solid experience of the print and digital production process
