Lead Engineering Manager



As a key member of the broader Software Delivery function, this role is responsible for leading, coordinating, and overseeing the successful planning and execution of software-related initiatives across the organisation. It involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with strategic objectives, adherence to timelines, and delivery of high-quality outcomes. Additionally, the role includes line management responsibilities for members of the Software Engineering Profession, providing mentorship, performance management, career development support, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and technical excellence.

This role is Hybrid working, so travel to our Travis Perkins head office based in Northampton is required for part of your working week!

Principal Accountabilities

Capable of managing Software Development teams with existing products and defined strategy. Able to clarify technical requirements, negotiate priorities, and manage projects to deliver on time Knows how to manage the performance and develop Software Engineers. Able to create successful career pathways. Knows how to audit SDE work (code, design) to make sure results are high quality. Ensures technology solutions are testable, monitored, secure and maintainable. Able to lead a team of SDEs tasked with building or solving difficult software problems Be a key contributor to the management of the Sub-Profession of Software Engineering. Drives effective business and technical discussions. Write clear documentation. Able to create an engineering roadmap. The testing of software systems must align with the technology objectives surrounding service and security. Play a leading role in considering and ensuring both elements in all that we do. Using key performance indicators and metrics, identify and execute on areas for improvement and efficiencies on a continuous basis, balancing all demands and priorities across software delivery and from our external stakeholders. Work as part of the collective Software Delivery team, providing clear direction and reporting across all software related initiatives, and deliver against a common vision. Deputise for the Head of Engineering when required. A number of 3rd party partners will be utilised. Ensure alignment within standard ways of working as set out by the Software Engineering function, whilst understanding contractual obligations and agreements with the third party

What you'll need to have/be:

Educated to degree level or above in Computer Science or other relevant subject, or equivalent industry experience. Evidence of setting up procedural frameworks to establish a successful software delivery process and adhering to established frameworks while faced with challenging situations Proven track record of delivering results with experience in adapting to unexpected changes with the ability to embrace those changes Ability to evaluate consumer feedback and instituting changes as necessary to manage expectations Demonstrable track record of embedding and implementing continuous improvements and value add initiatives Experienced in working with 3rd parties delivering software support and change 2+ years as an Engineering Manager
