About the role (External)
About the team..
The Network Rail Internal Audit team is a dynamic and diverse group, bringing together people with experience across Network Rail, FTSE 100 companies, the Big Four and the energy sector. Our team includes qualified accountants, engineers, HSE specialists and auditors, each contributing their unique expertise to make a real impact. We undertake a wide variety of audits across the whole of Network Rail, covering health and safety, operational risks, capital programmes and IT systems. What does the average day look like?
As a Lead Internal Auditor, you will play a key role in guiding and supporting the Audit Team to deliver outstanding results. Reporting to the Audit Manager, you will carry out the audit programme with accuracy, ensuring each audit meets the agreed Terms of Reference in scope and timing. You will be responsible for drafting Terms of Reference, audit programmes and reports, as well as reviewing and validating the team's work to make sure every detail is addressed. Alongside this, you will provide coaching and development opportunities for team members and build strong, collaborative relationships with Auditees. This is your chance to lead with purpose, make a real impact and help shape how the railway operates safely and effectively.
Who are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced Lead Internal Auditor with strong non-financial internal audit experience. You will have a proven track record auditing a wide range of complex operational risks, including asset management, health and safety, and capital programmes. Advanced experience using data analytics to deliver meaningful audit insights is essential, as is the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, applying strong problem-solving skills to every challenge.
Essential Criteria
Professional qualification - qualified accountant (ACA, CIMA, ACCA) or IIA or Operational experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills - written and verbal, including report writing
Ability to be a team player and to take the lead when appropriate
Good problem solving, decision making and analytical skills
Flexibility of approach, style and attitude
Operational and/or auditing experience in health and safety
Risk management experience
Controls and assurance experience
Experience of working transport, construction, and other similar industries
Experience of using data analytics to provide audit insights
