First Bus London are looking for a Lead Mastertech to serve as the senior technical authority across multiple depots.
The job holder will head diagnostic strategy, mentor the depot engineers, and act as the primary escalation point for advanced mechanical and electrical faults.
Your deep technical expertise will support the engineering leadership in developing best-in-class practices across our EV and ICE vehicle fleets, ensuring technical excellence and operational readiness at all times.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and oversee
complex fault diagnostics and in-depth repair work across a wide range of vehicle systems, with a focus on EV and hybrid technologies.
Act as the
primary escalation point
for depot engineers when resolving high-level faults or system failures.
Provide
strategic technical guidance
to Engineering Managers across garages, ensuring consistency in standards and practices.
Mentor and train
depot-based technicians, delivering on-site technical coaching, troubleshooting assistance, and continuous professional development.
Conduct
advanced diagnostic testing
on electric, hybrid, and diesel vehicles using the latest manufacturer and third-party tools.
Collaborate closely with the
Technical and Engineering Leadership Teams
, contributing detailed reports on fault trends, component failures, and performance analytics.
Drive
technical excellence
by liaising with OEMs, component suppliers, DVSA, the FTA, and London Buses to ensure compliance and early adoption of best practices.
Promote health & safety protocols
, ensuring all procedures are followed and documented in line with company and legal standards.
Maintain the masterTech support vehicle in pristine operational condition at all times.
Contribute to the
ongoing development of EV training
, sharing subject matter expertise and promoting technical consistency across the fleet.
Attend and guide on
internal and external training sessions
, ensuring all depot teams stay up to date with evolving technology and legislation.
Key Competencies
Strong leadership and coaching ability; experience supervising or mentoring technical staff.
Exceptional diagnostic capability across mechanical, electrical, and emissions systems (Euro 6 and above).
In-depth experience with hybrid and fully electric vehicle systems (BEVs) is highly desirable.
Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
High-level understanding of legislation and compliance (H&S, DVSA, environmental).

Proven ability to foster collaboration between engineering teams, OEMs, and regulatory bodies.
Qualifications
NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Heavy Vehicle Engineering (essential)
Additional certifications in EV/Hybrid technology (desirable)
Proficient IT skills, including diagnostic software and report writing tools
Valid UK driving license
