The Lead Mechanical Engineer leads a team, ensures compliance, and delivers mechanical engineering projects, providing technical authority, mentorship, and collaboration across the Engineering Department.




Although this role offers flexible/hybrid working, you will be expected to travel to any location or site within South East Water's supply areas, as required, as part of the project(s) you or your team are working on e.g. pre-construction and construction phase elements such as scoping or Contractor progress/design review meetings, defect reviews etc.

Main responsibilities:



Team Leadership and Management:



Lead, manage, and mentor a team of mechanical engineers, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment. Set clear objectives, monitor performance, and provide regular feedback and development opportunities for team members.

Technical Authority and Expertise:



Serve as the technical lead for all mechanical engineering matters within the Engineering Department. Provide expert technical advice and guidance on the design, specification, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems related to water infrastructure (e.g., pumps, valves, pipework, rotating equipment, HVAC).

Project Delivery:



Oversee the mechanical engineering input into capital projects from feasibility through to commissioning and handover. Review and approve mechanical designs, calculations, specifications, and drawings prepared by internal teams or external consultants.

Operational Support:



Provide technical support to operational teams for the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of existing mechanical assets. Investigate and resolve complex mechanical engineering issues and provide recommendations for solutions.

Stakeholder Management:



Liaise effectively with internal stakeholders across different departments (e.g., operations, asset management, procurement). Manage relationships with external consultants, contractors, and suppliers on mechanical engineering matters.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:



Develop, maintain and audit adherence to the companies mechanical safety and process technical memorandum, maintain the information within it and act as an authorising engineer for its use across the business. Ensure that all mechanical engineering work adheres to the company's quality systems. Participate in audits and contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards and procedures.

Budget and Resource Management:



Contribute to the development of budgets for mechanical engineering projects and activities. Manage the allocation of mechanical engineering resources effectively.

Health, Safety, and Environment:



Ensure that all mechanical designs and activities comply with the company's health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures. Participate in safety reviews and risk assessments.

You'll need:



Skills / Qualifications / Experience



A degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent training and substantial experience in the relevant area). Chartered Engineer status (CEng) with a relevant professional institution (e.g.,IMechE), or substantial industry experience with reputation for technical excellence. Competent IT skills, conversant with the Microsoft Office suite. Knowledge of asset management principles and practices. Effective communicator and collaborator. Excellent technical acumen and problem-solving abilities. Extensive knowledge and practical application of Water Industry Mechanical and Electrical Specifications (WIMES).

It will be a bonus if you have:



Skills / Qualifications / Experienc



Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline. Experience with BIM (Building Information Modelling) methodologies. Project management experience/awareness. Knowledge of using Google Workspace (Sheets, Docs, Slides etc).
