WHAT TO EXPECT

This role is within the Engineering Test Operations (EO), specifically the Transmission, Driveline and Electrification Team in Gaydon. The department delivers test capability which supports design, development, and validation of Powertrain systems from controls development and calibration through to certification and legislative compliance testing. The department operates a range of measurement and test facilities which are used to develop, verify and sign-off component, sub-system, and system level targets.

The Electrification Test Operations lead engineer is responsible for leading a team for delivery of validation, calibration and verification testing for the new vehicle programmes, this consists in delivering the Design validation plan (DVP) for electrical drive units, combustion engines paired with transmissions & vehicle programmes in the form of PiL (powertrain in the loop).

The role involves working with Internal customers to capture Design Validation (DV) requirements, manage the preparation of test activities trough the test engineering team, research and develop new methods for testing and develop the operational team to enable the department to become a world class testing partner for Powertrain.

To achieve this the Lead engineer will be responsible for recruiting, develop training, reach out to other departments to explore synergies, provide coaching and act as a technical knowledge hub for issue resolution.

As the ultimate Objective of the department is to produce high quality test data for JLR vehicles the Operations Lead Engineer will be responsible for developing Key Performance Indicators that measure both Operations efficiency (productive + running hours) and contribution of the department test data per vehicle Programme.

WHAT YOU\'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR

  • De-risking through planning and preparation
  • Ensure continuous workflow by reviewing and preparing upcoming tests
  • Deliver automation systems
  • Interpret Design verification methods for prototipe units and support the team in translating this into test automation language
  • Develop automation to meet the above test cases in an automated unmaned way
  • Deploy training packages and instructtions for test engineers and operators to operate above mentioned systems
  • Develop training packages to develop the skills within the team to deliver simulation techniques to emulate vehicle environment within testbed:
  • Deliver CAPL scripts within Vector based toolset to emulate vehicle networks
  • Work with Dspace toolchain to integrate Simulink based models with Testbed automation systems, build relationships with the Internal HiL simulation team to develop joint approach that meets customer demand
  • Ensure facility utilisation targets and testing gateways are achieved:
  • De-risking through planning and preparation
  • Ensure continuous workflow by reviewing and preparing upcoming tests via operational meetings
  • Maximise the use of automation to improve utilisation, repeatability, and quality
  • Take ownership of any issues and work with supporting teams to resolve with urgency
  • Follow existing and update best practices to support required level of output data quality
  • Maintain and update documentation
  • Look for novel approaches to challenges & communicate lessons learned
  • Customer focus
  • Build relationship with internal customer to understand their requirements
  • Apply suitable methods and experience to effectively deliver customer requirements
  • Supply concise and clear information to customers on test status & delays, offer solutions
  • Support the wider team
  • Provide management with accurate data to support decision making processes
  • Develop tools to maximise engineer time and increase efficiency
  • Deliver the DV plan in allocated time
  • Ensure continuous operation of the test facility with minimum interruption maximising the use of JLR\'s test assets
  • Project manage next up projects to ensure consistent and ON time delivery of next projects (leading metrics)
WHAT YOU\'LL NEED

Essential :
  • Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Control or Systems Engineer to a degree level.
  • Some experience with coding or event based language (Examples CAPL, C or Mathlab/Simulink)
  • Some experience in hardware or software testing
  • Some experience of automation systems such as PUMA, CADET, Morphee, LabView, AutomationDesk etc.
  • Some experience in problem solving and data analysis
  • Experience in leading operational department
  • Experience in management of small team of engineers
  • Competent in MS office
  • Valid Driving license
