The Faculty of Arts & Humanities wishes to appoint a Lecturer in English and Comparative Literature. The post will run from 1 September 2023 for a fixed term period of 12 months and will be shared between the departments of English (0.75 FTE) and Languages, Literature and Cultures (DLLC) (0.25 FTE)

The successful candidate will have teaching experience in the broad fields of postcolonial and comparative literature, and a research record appropriate to this present stage in their career. They will be able to teach on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, and although it is not possible to be definitive about these at the time of advertising they are likely to include the first year undergraduate modules Reading Poetry and , the second-year undergraduate module , and the final-year undergraduate module Testimony: , and as well as BA and MA dissertation supervision and a series of doctoral student training workshops. Like other members of department, they may also be asked to help mark modules that fall within their competence but which they have not taught directly. They will have pastoral duties (such as personal tutees) and may also play a part in departmental administration. The post will be based on the Strand Campus. The appointee will be responsible to the heads of English and DLLC.

This post is being offered on a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months from 1st September 2023.

Key responsibilities

  • Participate in the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching activities within the department in accordance with established departmental practice
  • Serve as required as module convenor for UG and MA modules
  • Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Head of Department and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support/problems
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations
  • Participate fully in assessment and examination processes as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning
  • Engage in professional development as appropriate
  • Contribute to departmental research culture, e.g. by attending research seminars/conferences, as appropriate
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department
The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria * PhD in English literature or related field
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the areas of postcolonial and comparative literature
  • High quality teaching skills: ability to communicate difficult concepts and material to students of all levels; ability to inspire and innovate as appropriate; skilled at helping students to develop their individual intellectual and personal potential
  • Demonstrated excellence in research in areas directly related to the advertised post
  • Excellent administrative skills: ability to support the organisational aspects of teaching, learning and research
  • Experience of working with virtual learning environments
  • Collegiate, proven ability to work with others and to support them where necessary.
  • Experience of contributing to the pastoral care of students
