About us

------------

UCL Earth Sciences is one of the oldest centres for Earth and planetary sciences in the UK, situated in Bloomsbury in the heart of London and within minutes of the British Museum, the British Library and the Royal Institution. The Department is housed in the refurbished Kathleen Lonsdale Building providing modern and integrated teaching and research facilities.

The Department runs undergraduate degree programmes (BSc/MSci) in Geology, Earth Sciences, Geophysics, and Environmental Geosciences, as well as postgraduate taught Masters programmes (MSc) in Geophysical Hazards and Geoscience, with an intake of ~100 undergraduate and ~50 MSc students per year.

Our Department is a friendly and welcoming place to work, with many opportunities for career development within an exciting and dynamic teaching and research environment. In the latest QS rankings, we are 21st in the world and 3rd or 4th in the UK (depending on degree scheme).

About the role

------------------

We are seeking a Lecturer (Teaching) to provide maternity cover for a period of nine months. Duties will include the delivery of a Level 6 (3rd year) module GEOL0068 Applied Geoscience for Mineral Resources and the Environment and the associated residential field trip to the Peak District, and acting as Careers Lead for Earth Sciences students, coordinating events, liaising with industry contacts, and promoting career development opportunities.

The taught module gives students an understanding of how geoscience research and techniques can be applied to Earth resources and associated environmental issues. Teaching draws from current research on the geological processes which control the formation and distribution of mineral resources; how applied geoscience can be used to assess and mitigate environmental impact associated with resource extraction and processing; and how we can more sustainably supply society with metals critical for green technology and the energy transition.

Practical classes introduce students to techniques used in industry to explore for, assess and extract mineral resources; the postholder will need to be able to identify and interpret rock samples from a variety of different ore deposits and to assess environmental, social and governance risks and the impact of resource extraction.

The successful candidate will also lead a field trip, including organisation and logistics. The field trip will allow students to assess the mineral exploration potential and environmental impact of resource extraction in a historic mining area, recognise mineralisation in the field, and practice professional skills used in the mineral resource and environmental geoscience industries. About you

-------------

The successful candidate will have a PhD in a relevant area of Earth Sciences, strong practical and theoretical background in applied earth resources, and experience of field trip leadership.

Experience of designing and developing teaching materials, student assessments and marking protocols, and field-based teaching and organisation is essential.
