This post is based within the School of Allied Health and Social care, one of three Schools within the College of Health, Psychology and Social Care. Our school embraces the professions associated with Occupational Therapy, Diagnostic Imaging and Social and Community Studies. You will join the discipline of Diagnostics and Clinical interventions; a very experienced, knowledgeable and enthusiastic group of academics and professionals who work with students to ensure they have a positive experience as a student and prepare them for their chosen profession in the best possible way. However, you will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues across different disciplines within the College.


About the role
You will join our team of enthusiastic, committed and friendly staff who deliver innovative teaching within our BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice degree apprenticeship programme. This programme, which has an innovative online delivery model; has recently been revalidated and received approval from the College of Operating Department Practice. Alongside the online delivery, learners attend the university site to undertake innovative skills weeks using our extensive simulation facilities. It is an exciting time to join this developing team to help shape operating department practice education within the University of Derby.



You will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of teaching in accordance with the university's strategic objectives in order to provide an exceptional student experience. You will work with the programme teams and Head of Discipline to ensure that curriculum development, quality management and enhancement comply with required standards and will also guarantee that research informs and inspires an evidence led curriculum and teaching.


The anticipated interview date will be 7th August 2025.




About You
We are looking for an experienced operating department practitioner or nurse who has demonstrable experience within the perioperative environment. You must hold a BSc (Hons) in operating department practice or an equivalent qualification with experience in a relevant field/discipline and must be registered with the HCPC or NMC.



You'll bring excellent teamwork and communication skills, along with a commitment to sharing your knowledge in innovative and engaging ways. As an educator, you'll understand the value of an outstanding student experience and be driven to create transformative, practice-informed learning environments.

Principal accountabilities###

Learning / Teaching




Effectively teach and facilitate learning on a range of subjects / modules within the operating department practice and wider discipline area on undergraduate, postgraduate, professional and post-experience programmes.

Ensure that knowledge from research and scholarly activities informs and enhances learning and teaching, as well as extending it to appropriate external activities such as knowledge transfer activities.

Ensure that module / programme design and delivery comply with the quality standards and regulations of the University.

Participate effectively in the assessment process, including the setting, marking and moderation of student work, providing constructive feedback and ensuring it is in accordance with quality assurance procedures.

Participate in the continuing review and development of module/programme delivery, incorporating innovative study modes, learning environments and pedagogic practices to engage and stimulate students, deliver effective learning outcomes and develop the skills and attributes of the 'Derby Graduate'.

Take on relevant module leader and/or programme leader responsibilities, including associated marketing, recruitment, delivery and ongoing programme development activities.

Research / Scholarship




Engage in individual research and collaborate both internally and externally on research projects that are consistent with the College, and contribute to influencing leading edge practice in the University and contribution to the REF.

Sustain and enhance the reputation of the University by publishing in appropriate quality journals and presenting at scholarly activities such as workshops, conferences and other similar events.

Develop and maintain contacts and relationship with relevant professional, research and industrial organisations.

Contribute to writing bids for externally funded research projects.

Act as a personal tutor, supporting and mentoring students as appropriate.

Provide pastoral care to students, referring when necessary to services that provide further support.

Support marketing and student recruitment activities as required.

Develop external links in order, for example, to support student recruitment, secure student placements, facilitate outreach work, generate income or build relationships for future activities.

Be responsible for administrative duties in areas such as admissions, timetabling, examinations and assessment of progress and student attendance.

Contribute to effective cross College / University working.

BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice or equivalent qualification and experience in a relevant field/discipline Fellowship of the Advanced HE (HEA) or willingness to work towards PhD (or submitted and awaiting examination) or equivalence accepted in a relevant subject area, for example by publication or through appropriate professional achievement or willingness to work towards within an agreed timeframe Registration with the HCPC or NMC
