Legal Accounts Assistant -

Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Legal Accounts Assistant to support our finance department and ensure the smooth running of day-to-day accounts operations within the firm. The ideal candidate ideally will have experience working in a UK law firm or professional services environment and a clear understanding of the SRA Accounts Rules. However, we will consider applicants who have a keen willingness to learn and who possess a qualification in accounting.
Key Responsibilities
Client & Office Accounting
Processing client and office account receipts and payments in accordance with SRA Accounts Rules.
Allocating funds to correct client matters and ensuring accurate ledger postings.
Monitoring and reconciling client account balances, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Processing payments via online banking platform
Billing & Financial Administration
Assisting with the preparation and dispatch of client invoices, credit notes and billing queries.
Ensuring costs and disbursements are correctly recorded and billed.
Maintaining accurate financial records across all practice management systems.
Bank Reconciliations
Performing daily and monthly bank reconciliations for client and office accounts.
Identifying discrepancies and working with the Accounts Manager to resolve issues promptly.
Purchase Ledger & Expenses
Processing purchase invoices, staff expenses and supplier payments.
Maintaining supplier records and responding to supplier queries.
Ensuring VAT is correctly applied and recorded.
Financial Reporting Support
Assisting with month-end tasks, including reporting, journal entries and ledger reviews.
Producing financial reports for partners and fee-earners as required.
Compliance & Audit
Ensuring all financial processes comply with SRA Accounts Rules, AML requirements and internal financial policies.
Supporting internal and external audit processes.
Skills & Experience Required/Essential
Previous experience in a UK law firm accounts team or professional services finance environment.
Proficiency with legal practice management systems
Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Outlook.
High level of numerical accuracy and attention to detail.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Desirable
AAT Level 2/3 (or studying towards AAT qualification).
Experience handling client monies, disbursements and legal aid billing.
Familiarity with VAT rules relating to legal services.
Strong understanding of SRA Accounts Rules.
