Job Description

One of our centrally based colleges are seeking an experienced and proactive

Librarian

for a 12-week assignment to support the relocation and management of library collections, alongside overseeing the day-to-day operations of the College Library.


This role is ideal for a qualified library professional with experience in academic environments and excellent organisational and IT skills.


Key Responsibilities

Library Relocation



Supervise the relocation of 6,000+ books to the new JCR building and oversee 33 bookcase transfers. Direct removal teams in arranging library furniture and desks. Ensure accurate Dewey Decimal order is preserved during packing/unpacking. Coordinate additional moves from the closed main library to on-campus storage. Oversee relocation of Archives to temporary or permanent storage in preparation for refurbishment.

Library & Collection Management



Full responsibility for acquiring, cataloguing, and managing print and digital resources. Manage the library budget and liaise with college staff and departments on reading lists. Maintain the library catalogue; ensure accurate classification and inventory records. Oversee conservation and exhibition of Antiquarian book collections. Conduct stock checks and usage analysis to optimise library holdings.

Reader Services



Support students and staff with enquiries and catalogue navigation. Manage circulation and user registration. Plan and deliver library inductions and maintain user guides. Promote library services via social media and college communications. Maintain security and general upkeep of the library.

Staff & Operations Management



Supervise a Library Assistant and coordinate invigilator rotas. Recruit, train, and manage invigilators; oversee timekeeping and payroll submissions. Liaise with Facilities for maintenance issues.

Finance & Reporting



Track spending and prepare statistical reports. Manage budgets for resources, staffing, and equipment needs.

Committee Engagement



Organise and minute termly Library Committee meetings. Attend University library forums and share best practices with colleagues.

Candidate Profile



Essential:



Experience working in a busy academic library. Knowledge of AACR2 / MARC cataloguing standards. Qualification in Librarianship or Information Science (or equivalent experience). Strong IT skills (Excel, Word, email, databases).
