About the Role
Bhuku Ltd is seeking a compassionate, confident and learner-focused
Literacy and Numeracy Tutor
to deliver non-accredited English and maths support to adult learners at
HMP Swaleside
. This role is a key part of our prison education and mentoring programme designed to boost confidence, soft skills, and progression into formal education and employment pathways.
You will work directly with learners across a variety of settings - including classrooms, peer mentor spaces, and potentially workshop-linked education areas. The position is ideal for someone with teaching or learning support experience who is passionate about improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for individuals in custodial settings.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and deliver
engaging, entry-level
literacy and numeracy sessions (Entry 1-Level 1).
Deliver
group-based and one-to-one learning
, tailored to individual learner needs.
Support peer mentors in developing their coaching skills and confidence.
Use trauma-informed and inclusive teaching practices to maximise participation.
Track learner engagement, review soft-skills progress, and prepare session resources.
Work with the prison's Education, Skills and Work (ESW) leads to promote progression.
Attend weekly handover or planning meetings (some reporting/admin time included).
Contribute to a culture of inclusion, encouragement and second chances.
Essential Requirements
Experience delivering or supporting English and/or maths provision (any setting).
Able to work in a prison environment, following all security and safeguarding procedures.
Passionate about adult learning and rehabilitation.
Confident communicator with strong organisational skills.
Resilient, adaptable and able to maintain professional boundaries.
Desirable (but not essential)
Teaching qualification (e.g. L3 AET or PTLLS)
Experience working in secure, custodial or alternative education settings.
Understanding of SEND, neurodiversity and inclusive teaching strategies.
Familiarity with trauma-informed education and soft skills development.
Enhanced DBS or prison vetting (or willingness to apply).
