About the role
We're seeking an experienced Live-in Carer to support an adult who sustained a
spinal cord injury (SCI) and brain injury in 2024
and has now returned home with live-in support. The client
does not require personal care
. Your focus is safety, routine, community access, behavioural support and companionship so the client can enjoy life at home as independently as possible.
A strong understanding of
Autonomic Dysreflexia (AD)
is essential, along with experience supporting people who may present with
challenging behaviour
after brain injury (e.g., reduced insight, impulsivity, frustration). You will work calmly, consistently and within least-restrictive, person-centred approaches.
Client matching preference: the client has asked to be matched with a female carer aged 30-45. Provide day-to-day structure, routine and companionship; promote independence and meaningful activity in and outside the home
Risk management & safety:
prevent, recognise and respond to Autonomic Dysreflexia in line with the care plan (e.g., identify triggers, monitor symptoms, remove cause, escalate per protocol)
Behavioural support:
use positive behaviour support and de-escalation; maintain clear boundaries and consistent routines
Community access & driving:
plan, drive and accompany to appointments, shopping and leisure; complete dynamic risk assessments
Household support:
light housekeeping, meal preparation, hydration prompts; care for a small dog (feeding, short walks, occasional vet/groomer trips)
Health coordination:
observe and report changes; liaise with family, GP and rehab MDT (OT/physio/neuropsychology/case manager)
Records & communication:
maintain accurate digital daily notes, incident forms and AD event logs; follow policies and escalation routes
Medication (if in plan):
safe prompting and documentation only within competence/delegation
Uphold safeguarding, confidentiality (UK GDPR) and health & safety standards at all times
Essential experience & skills
Recent community experience with
spinal cord injury
and/or
acquired/traumatic brain injury
Proven knowledge of
Autonomic Dysreflexia
and confidence to act quickly and correctly
Experience working with
challenging behaviour
using calm, trauma-informed approaches
Confident driver
with a clean UK licence; happy to drive regularly
Comfortable with dogs and pet-care tasks
Clear written/verbal communication; strong digital record-keeping; reliable, professional and compassionate
Desirable
Exposure to SCI-related delegated tasks (e.g., bowel/bladder routines, skin integrity monitoring) where appropriate and risk-assessed
Experience working alongside a multi-disciplinary rehab team
Current first aid/BLS (or willingness to update)
