We are looking for an organised and self-motivated individual to join the Highways Maintenance team here at Norfolk County Council as a Locality Designer. The Highway Area teams are responsible for the client highway maintenance and street works functions for the County Council as Highway Authority. Working with in-house and partnership staff for the delivery of works required, key services can include highway inspection and scheme design and identification, Member and public interface, supervision of works (including utilities), traffic management inspection and monitoring of all works affecting the public highway. In addition, we're also responsible for winter and emergency planning.
The locality based Area Design team support the delivery of Highway related Streetscene schemes and activities, the successful applicant will be a key member of staff in the design, development and discovery of solutions to area maintenance problems. This will enable the Area team to deliver its full programme of capital and revenue funded schemes.
Whilst it would be preferable to have experience of working in highway design functions, highway maintenance, construction, or a similar engineering environment, it is not essential as full training will be given. You will also need to possess excellent communication skills to deliver high quality customer service.
Duties can involve the delivery of the service in emergency situations, such as flooding or winter conditions, which may require work outside of normal working hours. You will be required to travel in order to deal with operational delivery queries at our contractor's request, customer service requests and therefore you will need to be able to travel to places not accessible on public transport routes. This is an interesting and varied role as each day is likely to be different and offers the chance for the successful candidate to gain key knowledge and growth for progression within the authority.
