LOCUM CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN IN DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY

8 PROGRAMMED ACTIVITIES

We are seeking to appoint an 8PA (0.80 WTE) locum consultant physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology (D& E) at Whipps Cross Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust. The post holder will work as part of a team of five Diabetes and Endocrine consultants to support provision of inpatient and outpatient care for patients with general medical, diabetes and endocrine problems. The post holder will also be supporting the general medicine on call roster. Full registration with the GMC is essential.

The post holder will support provision of inpatient care for patients with metabolic and general medical problems, and outpatient care for patients with diabetes or endocrine presentations. Furthermore, the appointee will be expected to contribute to and lead to development and expanding diabetes and endocrine care within the hospital and the community. The post holder will actively contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff. The post holder will be expected to partake in the general medical on call rota.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support provision of inpatient care for patients with metabolic and general medical problems, and outpatient care for patients with diabetes or endocrine presentations. Furthermore, the appointee will be expected to contribute to and lead to development and expanding diabetes and endocrine care within the hospital and the community. The post holder will actively contribute to the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff. The post holder will be expected to partake in the general medical on call rota.

The D& E department provides inpatient and outpatient care, offering an extensive range of specialist clinics. There are specialist clinics in antenatal diabetes, paediatric transition, insulin pumps, diabetic foot, and lipid disorders. There is also an expanding community-led diabetes service, predominantly for our type 2 diabetes population. There is a site-based weekly radiology MDT meeting, and regular attendance at the Barts radiology MDT. The department has highly experienced clinical nurse specialists in diabetes. Ward and outpatient work is supported by a full complement of junior doctors. A regular multi-disciplinary governance meeting is in place. There is also a weekly journal club, with regular input from external speakers.

  • GMC registration of adequate duration
  • MRCP or equivalent

  • Higher Research Degree
Relevant Experience
Essential
  • Broad experience in diabetes and endocrine clinics and ward work
  • Excellent clinical skills
  • ALS certificate
Desirable
  • Experience in conducting clinical trials
Clinical Skills
Essential
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team - clinical and management.
  • Ability to manage staff and resources effectively
  • Ability to communicate effectively with GPs and other professionals in hospital and community
Desirable
  • DAFNE training including course observation
Knowledge
Essential
  • Detailed knowledge of Diabetes and Endocrinology and of the specialist skills required for this post
  • Knowledge of multi-disciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients

  • Interest in Medical Audit

  • An understanding of techniques to improve efficiency and productivity of clinical processes
Teaching Skills
