Job Summary
The post holder will work as a Locum SHO across a range of specialties depending on rota allocation and service needs. Duties will include providing high-quality clinical care, supporting senior colleagues in managing inpatients and outpatients, clerking new admissions, and contributing to ward rounds and multidisciplinary team working.
This post is suited to doctors with
at least two years of prior NHS experience at SHO level or above
who can adapt quickly to service needs and provide safe, effective care across multiple specialties.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Provide day-to-day medical care of inpatients and new admissions under consultant supervision.
Clerk patients, take histories, perform examinations, order investigations, and formulate management plans.
Participate in ward rounds, outpatient clinics, theatres, or emergency departments (depending on specialty).
Liaise with nursing staff, allied health professionals, and other colleagues to ensure safe and effective patient care.
Participate in the on-call rota as required.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation in medical records in accordance with GMC and Trust standards.
Assist in the safe handover of patients between shifts.
Adhere to all NHS Trust policies including infection control, safeguarding, and confidentiality.
Specialty Rotations May Include
General Medicine:
clerking medical admissions, acute take, ward cover.
General Surgery:
pre- and post-operative care, emergency surgical admissions, ward support.
Paediatrics:
inpatient care, admissions to children's wards, outpatient clinics.
clerking psychiatric admissions, supporting ward-based assessments, working with MDTs.
Qualifications & Requirements
Essential:
MBBS or equivalent medical degree.
Full GMC registration with a current licence to practise.
Minimum of two years' post-Foundation NHS experience at SHO level or above
(not including FY2 rotations).
ALS (Advanced Life Support) certification.
Previous experience in at least one of the listed specialties.
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable:
Specialty-specific training (e.g., APLS, ATLS, MRCP Part 1, MRCS Part 1, etc.).
Recent NHS experience within the last 12 months.
Evidence of commitment to ongoing professional development.

Agency Locum, temporary contract.
Hours:
As per rota (may include nights, weekends, and on-call duties).
Pay Rate:
Competitive, depending on experience and agency terms.
Location:
NHS Trust hospitals and community sites as required.
