The Maintenance Worker will be responsible for ensuring that the care home's facilities and equipment are well-maintained, safe, and compliant with health and safety standards. You will work closely with the care home team to ensure the building remains in excellent condition, addressing repairs and improvements as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
General Maintenance:
Perform routine checks and repairs on the care home's plumbing, heating, electrical, and ventilation systems.
Building Upkeep:
Ensure that all areas of the building, including resident rooms, communal spaces, and outdoor areas, are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
Safety Compliance:
Carry out regular safety checks on equipment, fire systems, and emergency exits. Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and local authority requirements.
Equipment Repairs:
Repair or replace faulty equipment such as lifts, lighting, and appliances.
External Contractors:
Liaise with external contractors for more complex issues, overseeing their work and ensuring it meets the home's standards.
Preventative Maintenance:
Undertake scheduled maintenance to prevent future breakdowns, including servicing boilers, checking alarms, and inspecting machinery.
Ad hoc Tasks:
Respond promptly to any maintenance issues or emergencies as they arise, minimizing disruption to the daily activities of the care home.
Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and safety checks.
Key Requirements:
Experience:
Proven experience in general maintenance or a similar hands-on role, ideally in a care home or healthcare setting.
Skills:
Competence in basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills.
Knowledge of health and safety regulations related to maintenance in care homes.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills for interacting with staff, residents, and contractors.
Qualifications:
Relevant qualifications or certifications in building maintenance or a related field (e.g., NVQ in Maintenance, City & Guilds in Electrical/Plumbing). would be advantageable.
Health & Safety training (e.g., IOSH or equivalent) would be an advantage.
Personal Qualities:
A caring and compassionate approach, understanding the specific needs of elderly residents.
Reliable and trustworthy, with a proactive and "can-do" attitude.
Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Ability to work under pressure and respond to emergencies effectively.
