Job Overview
We are seeking a highly organised and detail-focused Accounts Assistant to support the finance function across a wide range of duties. The role involves processing day-to-day transactions, managing key accounting schedules, assisting with financial reporting, and ensuring the company remains compliant with HMRC requirements. This position would suit someone with experience preparing financial or management accounts, or an individual with a relevant bookkeeping qualification such as AAT.
Key Responsibilities
Sales Ledger & Credit Control
Post and reconcile all sales transactions.
Prepare and send customer statements.
Monitor outstanding balances and chase overdue debts professionally and promptly.
Process customer refunds in line with company policy.
Banking & Cash Management
Prepare and complete daily/weekly banking.
Perform accurate and timely bank reconciliations.
Investigate and resolve any discrepancies.
Payroll & HMRC Compliance
Prepare and process the company's payroll.
Manage all associated HMRC payments, including VAT, PAYE and Class 1 National Insurance contributions.
Ensure all filings and submissions are completed accurately and on time.
Utilities & Contract Administration
Manage and liaise with providers for company energy, water, internet and other service contracts.
Monitor contract terms, renewal dates and cost changes.
Financial Reporting & Month-End Duties
Assist in the production of monthly financial statements, including Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet.
Complete nominal code analysis to ensure accuracy and consistency across accounts.
Maintain the fixed asset register and process depreciation.
Prepare and post journals, including prepayments and accruals.
Assist with the extended trial balance and general ledger reviews.
Support the Group Finance Director with year-end schedules and audits as required.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
Previous experience in an accounting or finance support role.
Experience preparing or assisting with financial statements or management accounts ora bookkeeping qualification (e.g., AAT Level 3/4 or equivalent).
Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping.
Competence with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
Desirable:
Experience with payroll processing and HMRC submissions.
Familiarity with managing business utilities or service contracts.
