The Role
At Sperrin Metal, we are expanding our operations in bespoke storage & racking manufacturing and the Management Accountant role supports this growth by assisting with financial planning, analysis and reporting tailored to a fast-paced production environment. Working alongside the Company Accountant the role will focus on robust management information, cost control, budgeting and process improvement, with a strong emphasis on leveraging systems and data to drive better decisions.
You will play a key part in strengthening financial controls, developing standard costing, enhancing inventory and stock reporting, and shaping the financial insight that supports the Managing Director, Operations Manager, Production Manager and wider senior management team
Key Responsibilities
Assist with the day-to-day running of the finance function, working closely with the Company Accountant to deliver timely and accurate financial information.
Prepare monthly management accounts, including profit and loss, balance sheet and key performance indicators, with insightful commentary for senior management.
Support the development and monitoring of annual budgets and periodic forecasts, partnering with operations to understand drivers, risks and opportunities.
Work with the Company Accountant to implement and improve standard costing, overhead allocation and cost of goods sold reporting for manufacturing activities.
Lead detailed cost analysis for metal fabrication, labour, overheads and inventory, helping to identify efficiency opportunities and margin improvements.
Take ownership for improving processes around inventory valuation, stock accuracy and related controls, working with the Operations and Production teams.
Drive the continuous improvement of financial controls, including documentation, testing and refinement of key processes, with an awareness of audit processes and requirements.
Prepare information for internal and external audits and support audit queries in a timely and professional manner.
Contribute to cash flow forecasting and financial modelling to support investment decisions and strategic initiatives.
Act as a key user for Sage and related reporting tools, identifying opportunities to automate and streamline reporting, reconciliations and analysis.
Lead on the design and implementation of improved reporting solutions and dashboards (for example using Excel, PowerQuery and future tools such as Power BI or Qlik) to support management decision-making.
Work collaboratively with IT and external partners where needed to support system changes, enhancements and new tool implementation.
Provide clear, concise analysis and presentations to the Managing Director, Company Accountant and wider senior management team, helping them understand performance and drive action. ?
Build strong working relationships with the Operations Manager, Production Manager and other stakeholders to support continuous improvement across the business.
Support ad?hoc projects, business cases and financial analysis as required, particularly where process improvement, controls and data quality are involved
Essential Criteria
Fully qualified or finalist Accountant (CIMA, ACCA, CAI or equivalent), with a strong grounding in management accounting.
At least 3-5 years' experience in a management accounting, financial analysis or similar role, ideally within a manufacturing or production environment.
Strong experience preparing management accounts, budgets and forecasts, with the ability to explain variances and performance drivers clearly. ?
Good understanding of cost accounting, including standard costing, overhead allocation, cost of goods sold and inventory valuation. ?
Demonstrable experience in improving financial processes, controls and reporting, with a continuous improvement mindset and the confidence to challenge existing ways of working.
Advanced Excel skills, including use of functions and tools such as PowerQuery, with a track record of building efficient, repeatable reporting and analysis files.
Proficiency in accounting/ERP software, ideally Sage, and the appetite to learn and implement new systems or reporting tools such as Power BI, Qlik or similar.
Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and a logical approach to problem-solving.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships across finance, operations and senior management. ?

Desirable Criteria
Experience within the metal fabrication, racking, material handling or other heavy manufacturing industries.
Experience of leading or playing a key role in ERP/reporting implementations or upgrades, including designing templates, data flows and standard operating procedures.
Experience with manufacturing processes desirable (e.g., cost of goods sold, overhead allocation)
