Management Accountant
to support project financials, drive reporting accuracy, and work closely with operational teams.
Role Overview
The
Management Accountant
will be responsible for delivering accurate and timely financial information to support decision making across the business. This includes overseeing project profitability, cost analysis, budgeting, forecasting, cashflow and ensuring financial controls are in place. The role requires strong communication with purchasing, sales, commercial and HR departments to maintain transparency with control over costs and commercial insight within the UK construction or site-based SME sector would be desirable.
Key Responsibilities
1. Management Reporting
Produce accurate monthly management accounts for the business and key projects, including P&L, balance sheet reconciliations, and cash flow forecasts
Provide variance analysis and commentary against budget, forecast, and prior periods.
Prepare consolidated reports for group-level or board reporting.
2. Cost Control & Analysis
Monitor site and project costs, ensuring accurate allocation of labour, plant, and materials.
Analyse job costing reports and investigate anomalies or overspend.
Support commercial teams with cost-value reconciliations (CVRs).
3. Budgeting & Forecasting
Assist with annual budgeting and quarterly reforecasts across the business.
Liaise with sales staff and managers to ensure accurate projections.
Monitor cash flow forecasts, identifying potential shortfalls or surpluses.
4. Project Support
Attend regular site and project review meetings.
Work closely with staff and managers to understand project timelines, risks, and cost impacts.
Provide financial advice to operational staff to aid performance and cost efficiencies.
5. Financial Controls & Compliance
Ensure compliance with internal controls, policies, and procedures.
Handle VAT returns and ensure full compliance with IR.
Staff wage & financial ability working alongside HR administration
Support preparation of audit schedules and respond to auditor queries.
Maintain accurate fixed asset registers, accruals, prepayments, and WIP calculations.
6. Systems & Process Improvement
Support the implementation and improvement of financial systems
Identify process inefficiencies and recommend improvements in financial reporting or controls.
Act as a commercial business partner to operations teams; provide financial insight to aid project delivery and strategic planning.
Key Skills & Qualifications
Essential:
Part-qualified or fully qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or similar).
2+ years' experience in a management accounting role, ideally within manufacturing/construction or similar sectors.
Strong working knowledge of management accounting principles, WIP, CVRs, and budget control.
Proficient in Excel and financial systems (e.g., Xero, Sage, Causeway, or similar ERP).
Ability to work across departments and communicate with non-financial site personnel.
Desirable:
Prior experience in an SME manufacturing/site construction or infrastructure industry or contracting
Experience dealing with subcontractor costs, valuations, and retentions.
Some knowledge of CIS (Construction Industry Scheme) and revenue recognition under IFRS 15 would be appreciated but not essential.
