We are seeking a skilled
Manual Machinist/CNC Operator
to support the restoration and maintenance of historic locomotives, carriages, and mechanical equipment. This is a hands-on role in a unique working environment where craftsmanship and authenticity are key.
What You'll Do:
Operate manual lathes, milling machines, grinders, and other traditional tools to produce or refurbish mechanical parts.
Reproduce and restore components for steam locomotives, coaches, and wagons - often from original or worn examples.
Work from engineering drawings or reverse engineer when documentation is unavailable.
Maintain high workshop standards, adhering to health & safety regulations.
Collaborate with engineers, volunteers, and project teams across restoration projects.
Must be able to operate a 2 axis cnc lathe tool
What We're Looking For:
Essential:
Experience with manual machining (lathes, mills, etc.) in a workshop environment.
Experience operating a 2 axis cnc lathe tool
Ability to read and work from technical drawings.
Strong attention to detail and a pride in craftsmanship.
Comfortable working with a range of metals including steel, bronze, and cast iron.
Desirable:
Experience in the heritage or railway sector.
Familiarity with steam-era components or vintage mechanical systems.
Knowledge of hand fitting, scraping, or traditional fabrication methods.
Qualifications & Attributes:
Time-served engineering apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience.
Safety-conscious with a positive, proactive attitude.
Passion for heritage preservation and traditional engineering.
Team player who enjoys problem-solving and sharing knowledge.
