MARKET STALL - RETAIL ASSISTANT (BAKERY) - Weekends (11-13 hours)

The Free From Bakehouse is an established bakery supplying customers with gluten free baked goods, of which about 75% are also vegan. We have been trading at Borough Market for over 12 years and have built up a loyal customer base throughout that time.

We are now looking for a reliable, hard-working, retail sales individual to sell our free from baked goods at our market stall on a weekly basis.

Food Retail experience should be gained from working in the UK for a specialist or artisan food business, or an independent caffe or restaurant (not McDonalds, KFC etc). This is a permanent role.

You'll have an engaging personality, speaking with customers from all parts of the globe, the ability to be efficient and organised, with a positive sales attitude and want to help customers fulfill their dietary requirements via our award-winning baked goods, and stamina for this busy sales role.

The vacancy starts Saturday 30th of August

Days/hours as follows:

Saturday - 11:30 - 17:30/18:00

Sunday - 11:30 - 16:30/17:00

(You might be occasionally asked to work extra day/different hours to cover other team members holiday or when busy)

Key daily responsibilities:

Ensuring a visually appealing presentation of bakes, being mindful of cross contamination between certain bakes - training on allergens is given. Listening and being vigilant of customers' dietary needs. Helping them select products suitable for them to enjoy. Taking card payments via Square app on iPad or (in emergencies) with your own phone. Doing an accurate stock count once daily and communicating stock levels with bakery, along with any packaging/cleaning needs. Selling with a smile! Up-selling, cross-selling, pro-actively recommending baked goods (sampling the cakes yourself is part of the job - customers often ask what your favourite is*!).
Topping up stock levels throughout the day, preparing slices in advance, being mindful of stock rotation. Ensuring storage unit & fridges are cleaned on a weekly basis. And ensuring compliance with all health and safety aspects Working alongside your colleague to close the stall (cleaning down, packaging away), to company standards, in the timescale allocated. During busy times (half term, bank holidays) you may be asked to help set up the stall during busy times. Monitoring packaging stock levels in advance of need. Communication via What's App to Bakery team (offsite) as and when required throughout the day and carrying out instructions delivered by them.

Candidate requirements:

A calm, friendly chatty nature when interacting with customers and maintain this during busy periods. A positive upbeat personality to greet customers and sell. Physically able to push trolleys over uneven paving, be able to lift stock, and erect a stall. Stamina to work outdoors - in ALL weathers. Being patient and tolerant of customers questions regarding allergens. Fluent in written and spoken English. Other languages a benefit. Punctual, reliable, and well organised. Takes pride in having a clean & safe working environment. A minimum of one year's sales experience for an artisan food market stall or independent food business is essential. Preferably have a Level 2 food hygiene certificate (or be prepared to get one). Able to work legally in the UK. Proof will be required. Non-smoker well presented.

The starting rate is 13.50 per hour. This will be reviewed after a successful probation period.
