Job Description

We are looking for a skilled and innovative?Material Development Engineer?with expertise in?rubber materials and chemicals used in aluminium etching

As a?Material Development Engineer,?you will lead the development and optimization of elastomeric compounds and surface treatment processes for advanced manufacturing applications. This role involves hands-on formulation, testing, and process development to meet performance, durability, and environmental standards.

Evaluate and characterize rubber properties such as hardness, tensile strength, elongation, abrasion resistance, compression set, and aging behaviour Develop and improve chemical processes for manufacturing products such as polymers, coatings, fuels, and specialty chemicals. Work with suppliers to source raw materials and ensure consistency in compound quality. Investigate material failures and recommend improvements or alternative formulations. Take a lead role in projects, including planning and budgeting. Conduct laboratory experiments and pilot-scale trials to test new formulations and process improvements. Analyse raw materials and finished products to ensure compliance with quality, safety standard and help steer development (as part the product development cycle) Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, production, and quality assurance. Maintain accurate records of experiments, procedures, and results. Ensure compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations. Troubleshoot chemical production issues and recommend corrective actions. Stay updated on industry trends, new technologies, and regulatory changes Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with the project plan and keep project progress up to date. Produce technical documents, reports and presentations for both internal and external use (work instructions, job packs, etc.). Research and investigate technologies and processes to ensure that the Company remains aware of the latest developments. Co-operate fully with the company regarding all H&S matters and be aware of the importance of complying with H&S Policy to ensure a safe workplace and maintain the integrity of the environment (See P-HS-17175). You may be required to train other colleagues as and when requested. Any additional work identified as necessary for the smooth operation of the business

Qualifications:



Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Preferred Skills:



Strong understanding of rubber types (e.g., NR, SBR, EPDM, NBR, FKM, silicone) and their properties. In-depth knowledge of aluminium surface chemistry and experience with etching agents such as phosphoric acid, nitric acid, or alkaline solutions. Experience with rubber processing techniques such as mixing, extrusion, and moulding. Familiarity with testing standards (e.g., ASTM D412, D2240, D395, D471). Proficient in using laboratory equipment and methods such as tensile testers and titration Strong knowledge of chemical process design, analytical techniques, and laboratory safety. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Proven experience in an industrial or manufacturing chemistry role (2+ years preferred). Strong communication and teamwork abilities.

Desirable Skills:



Knowledge of FEA or simulation tools for material behaviour prediction. Background in automotive, aerospace, or industrial rubber applications. Knowledge of laboratory instruments such as GC, HPLC, FTIR, and spectrophotometers.
