Purpose of the role:

As an M&E Designer, you will be responsible for the design, coordination and technical development of mechanical and electrical building services systems across residential, commercial and educational projects. A key focus of the role will include the design of commercial plantrooms, encompassing heating, ventilation, electrical distribution and low-carbon energy systems.

Your work will directly support the adoption of low-carbon technologies and help clients achieve energy efficiency and sustainability goals. Experience within plantroom layouts, equipment selection, system sizing and integration is highly desirable. Practical knowledge of site installations, including undertaking site visits, will enhance design quality and buildability.

Due to the nature of some projects, particularly within educational environments, this role will require a satisfactory DBS check.

Responsibilities:

Develop mechanical and electrical designs for building services systems, including plantrooms, heating, ventilation, electrical distribution and low-carbon technologies. Produce detailed design calculations, schematics, layouts and specifications in line with relevant standards, manufacturer guidance and regulations. Design and size plantroom equipment such as boilers, heats pumps, pumps, buffer vessels, AHUs, electrical panels and controls. Ensure designs comply with Building Regulations, BS standards, CIBSE guidance, G3 requirements and project-specific criteria. Coordinate M&E designs with other disciplines, contractors and suppliers to ensure buildability, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Attend and conduct site visits as required to review installations, resolve technical queries, assess buildability and support project delivery. Review site feedback, commissioning results and engineer input to refine and improve future designs. Contribute to the development of standard details, specifications and best-practice design approaches. Produce clear technical documentation, including reports, schedules, compliance records and equipment specifications.

Skills

Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical building services design principles. Experience designing or coordinating commercial plantrooms and associated systems is highly desirable. Knowledge of low-carbon and renewable technologies, including heat pumps, solar PV, EV charging and energy-efficient systems. Ability to interpret client briefs and translate them into practical, compliant designs. Proficiency with design software and tools (e.g. AutoCAD, Revit, M&E calculation software). Strong attention to detail, problem-solving and organisational skills. Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams. Understanding of site-based engineering constraints and the ability to ensure designs are practical, safe and maintainable.

Qualifications

HNC/HND or Degree in Building Services Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline. Working knowledge of relevant standards and guidance (e.g. CIBSE, BS 7671, Building Regulations). Relevant commercial plantroom, heating, ventilation or electrical distribution design training/certification is advantageous. Experience or training in low-carbon and renewable energy system design (e.g. Solar PV, EV charging, ASHPs) is beneficial. Progress toward or interest in professional accreditation (e.g. CEng, IEng, MCIBSE) is desirable but not essential. Full UK Driving Licence, with willingness to travel to project sites. Ability to successfully obtain and maintain a DBS check as required for the role.
We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all qualified individuals. We are committed to fair and inclusive recruitment practices and to eliminating discrimination in all its forms.
