About us:

The Mechanical engineering and hardware group is responsible for the analysis, development and test of spacecraft Mechanical Structures up to full Spacecraft Level, in support to the various Airbus Defence and Space groups, as well as detailed design analysis and test of spacecraft equipment, such as antennas and mechanisms. The responsibilities typically span the full project life-cycle from early conceptual design support through qualification and up to final delivery to the Customer.

Typically, the work of the department involves defining the concept design in co-operation with the project architects and designers, and creating a mathematical model representing the mechanical Geometry and properties of the system. The model is used to evaluate the design, through calculating the performance i.e. stiffness, mass and strength of the system. In the latter part of a project lifetime, the emphasis moves from theoretical analysis to support-to-manufacture and test of the system. At spacecraft level, integration and testing can take place in various locations throughout Europe. At equipment level, the facilities in Stevenage are generally used.

What will you be doing:

The role for the Mechanical engineering students is to support the varied work of the Mechanical engineering and hardware group such as on large EASA science projects like the ExoMars Rover/Lander module and the intensely competitive provision of global telecommunications via the Airbus Defence and Space OneSat and 3000neo family of spacecraft. There will also be an opportunity to take ownership of several internal Process Improvement tasks with the support of a senior engineer.

The three main activities of the role are:

Working on new spacecraft Mechanical Analysis tools and analysis techniques to help improve the efficiency of the Mechanical department work.

Supporting lead Mechanical engineers undertaking analysis tasks on various Spacecraft Projects and Structures.

Shadow Lead Engineer during Structural testing of Spacecraft Platform and/or Components.
