The ideal candidate will work closely with design, engineering, fabrication, and project management teams to create safe, innovative, and production-ready mechanical systems aligned with creative and operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Develop mechanical concepts and detailed designs for show action equipment, animated elements, special effects, mechanisms, and themed components.
Produce accurate 3D models, assemblies, 2D drawings, tolerance analyses, and engineering documentation.
Perform engineering calculations including stress analysis, load calculations, material sizing, kinematic assessments, and motion studies.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams to integrate mechanical solutions with electrical, structural, scenic, and control systems.
Liaise with fabrication teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-efficient, and aligned with workshop capabilities.
Support prototype builds, mechanical testing, FATs, and refinement of mechanical systems.
Participate in on-site installation, commissioning, alignment, and troubleshooting of mechanical components.
Identify mechanical risks and propose safe, compliant engineering solutions.
Prepare BOMs, specification sheets, technical reports, assembly guides, and maintenance documentation.
Ensure all designs comply with UK/European mechanical, safety, and certification standards including CE/UKCA requirements.
Technical & Professional Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field.
3-5 years of experience in mechanical design within themed entertainment, automation, machinery, special effects, robotics, creative fabrication, or related industries.
Strong proficiency in CAD and simulation tools (SolidWorks preferred; Inventor or similar also accepted).
Understanding of manufacturing methods: metal fabrication, machining, welding, joinery, plastics, pneumatics, and mechanical assembly.
Experience designing mechanical mechanisms, linkages, motion systems, and moving scenic elements.
Knowledge of materials, tolerancing, GD&T, fastener standards, bearings, actuators, linear motion systems, and safety mechanisms.
Ability to produce clear, production-ready engineering drawings and fabrication packs.
Familiarity with FEA tools and motion analysis is a strong advantage.
Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally under fast-paced project timelines.
Understanding of relevant ISO, UKCA, CE, machinery directive, and safety standards.
