About the Team:

Working in the Aviation Engineering Centre (AEC), the Mechanical Design Team are responsible for developing and delivering Mechanical Design solutions for the modification of Civil or Military Aircraft. This includes the adaption of the aircraft to incorporate changes, for flight testing; trials and approvals, and can include adding or adapting equipment for the aircraft to enable flight tests to be performed safely.

What will I be doing?

A successful applicant\'s role will be based within the Mechanical Design Team, at Boscombe Down, delivering Mechanical Design solutions for the modification of aircraft, working alongside other members of the team, and colleagues across the business. This will include:

  • Use of mechanical design CAD tools (SolidWorks or Solid Edge)
  • Creation of 3D models and assemblies
  • Creation of 2D engineering drawings, for manufacture; installation and maintenance
  • Confident working with geometric tolerance
  • Conduct surveys of aircraft to determine potential solutions
  • Develop an understanding of the customer requirements
  • Define installations of cable harnesses
  • Contribute to the preparation of design review presentations, of the proposed solution(s)
  • Manage and deliver on assigned tasks and work to deadlines
  • Accountable for the delivery of own work allocation as agreed with the team leader
  • Ensuring that all work delivered meets the required standards and specifications
  • Maintenance of records in accordance with local procedures
  • An appreciation of other disciplines e.g. Electrical / Electronics, and comfortable working collaboratively with SME\'s e.g. Stress / Aerodynamics etc.
  • Interacting with other teams members, including design; stress analysis; production; installations; project management
  • Apply sound engineering judgement
Academic requirements:

You will need to have obtained an accredited honours degree in a related discipline e.g. Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or similar, with a key focus on design.

Additional requirements:
  • Have a strong interest and/or experience within mechanical engineering design;
  • Experience and interest in CAD (Computer Aided Design), ideally with SolidWorks and/or Solid Edge;
  • Desire to work with multi-disciplinary teams, solving routine and non-routine problems for a wide range of customers;
  • Literate in Windows-based computing, including use of MS Office, including Excel;
  • Knowledge of/or experience in finite element analysis of structures advantageous;
  • Organised and delivery-focussed, taking pride in your work;
  • Collaborative and team-player;
  • Effective communicator
  • Proven ability to write high-quality reports and presentations, and;
