The Mechanical Inspector will ensure that spacecraft hardware, assemblies and sub-assemblies meet the defined mechanical, assembly and manufacturing specification, quality and process requirements.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Inspect mechanical components, assemblies and sub-assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications, process instructions and quality standards.
Use inspection tools (e.g., micrometers, verniers, depth gauges, borescopes where applicable) and inspection techniques to verify dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, clearance, fit, and other mechanical features.
Perform first article inspections, in-process inspections and final inspections for mechanical build tasks.
Review and interpret engineering drawings, CAD models and assembly instructions; identify deviations, non-conformances and potential manufacturing or assembly issues.
Raise Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) or Occurrence Reports (ORs) for deviations from requirement, coordinate with manufacturing and quality teams for corrective/containment actions and closure.
Collaborate with manufacturing, assembly, test, engineering and quality teams to ensure build readiness, conforming work execution and verification sign-off.
Ensure cleanliness and handling requirements for space hardware are adhered to (contamination control, ESD, etc) where applicable.
Maintain accurate inspection records, traceability of hardware, CIP (corrective & improvement processes) and input to continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., 5S, lean manufacturing, defect reduction).
Support audits, supplier inspections and subcontractor monitoring if required.
Ensure adherence to company and customer quality standards (e.g., EN 9100, ECSS or equivalent)
Act as a mechanical inspection point-of-contact on the shop-floor, assisting operators with interpretation of drawing/work instructions, measurement techniques and best practices.
Person Specification
Essential:
Engineering or manufacturing/inspection qualification (e.g., HNC/HND or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, manufacturing or related discipline.
Proven experience (ideally in aerospace, defence or high-precision manufacturing) in mechanical inspection / quality inspection of components, assemblies or complex hardware.
Strong ability to interpret engineering drawings, GD&T symbols, tolerancing, fits & clearances.
Skilled in using precision measurement tools and inspection equipment.
Excellent attention to detail, analytical mindset, ability to identify issues early, raise concerns and support resolution.
Good verbal and written communication skills; comfortable working in a cross-functional team environment.
Ability to work to a high standard of quality, with strong process discipline and traceability mindset.
Willingness to comply with required security clearance, export control and confidentiality requirements.
