Job Description

Hours: Full-time, Tuesday to Saturday, 8am to 4pm, (weekend availability essential)

Salary: Starting at minimum wage with the potential for increase dependent on experience

Experience Required: Preferred but not limited to someone with a background in veterinary practice (e.g. Vet Nurse or Animal Care Assistant at a veterinary practice)

We are a dedicated, fast-paced animal rescue centre specializing in the care of dogs and cats, currently housing over 200 animals. We are seeking a passionate and capable Medical Assistant to help administer daily medications and provide essential support in the ongoing treatment of our rescued animals under the supervision of our vet.

About the Role


In this vital role, you'll be responsible for administering medications prescribed by our veterinary team to many animals across site. With such a high volume of patients (often in excess of 100 patients per day) so strong time management, efficiency, and attention to detail are essential.

This is a highly active and hands-on position, requires someone who is calm, passionate and confident handling animals from a wide variety of backgrounds, including nervous or under-socialized dogs, such as ex-breeding animals who may never have been handled before.

The successful candidate must be responsible and committed in following strict instructions, ensuring our rescues receive the medication as prescribed by our vet.

Key Responsibilities


- Administering medication prescribed by our on-site vets, including but not limited to giving tablets, ear cleaning, applying eye drops and various other treatments.

- Observing animals closely and identifying concerns or changes during treatment, checking for progress and improvements, and reporting them to our vet team/management

- Liaising with adopters to explain medical needs and provide confidence in ongoing care for their new pet

- Maintaining close communication with the medical team working opposite shifts to you, as well as the vet team for the highest quality of care and continuity

What We're Looking For


- A strong and clear communicator who can work well as part of a team

- Someone with experience in general veterinary practice is preferred, ideally as a vet nurse or animal care assistant, although this isn't essential.

- Someone with a keen eye for detail and excellent time management

- A calm and confident animal handler, particularly with dogs and cats of varying temperaments

- Someone who is ready for a demanding, hands-on and high-paced job where you are on your feet all day

- Someone who is passionate about the welfare of rescue animals and eager to be part of their recovery journey
