Job Summary



JOB DESCRIPTION



TITLE: Men in Sheds and Walking Group Leader.



EMPLOYED BY: Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre



RESPONSIBLE TO: Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre Trustees through the Chief Officer.



SALARY 13.91 per hour-1-year contract initially.



WORKING HOURS 18 hours/ week over 3 days, Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday (Days not negotiable due to the days of service delivery).



ANNUAL HOLIDAY 25 days pro rata and public holidays



PENSION This post will be subject to automatic enrolment in a pension scheme.



CLOSING DATE Closing date 31st of December 2025 to interview the week commencing 12th of January 2026.



A current driving licence and access to a car are essential for the post.



The successful applicant will be employed subject to a successful DBS check.



Support the other members of staff as needed, cover annual leave and sickness.



You may need to undertake MIDAS Training as we own our minibus.

Duties



Purpose of the Role


To lead and facilitate Men in Sheds sessions ( general wood crafts)and a walking group that promotes mental well-being, social connection, and physical activity for individuals experiencing mental health challenges. The role aims to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where participants can build confidence, reduce isolation, and improve overall well-being. To drive our mini bus and deliver services.

Key Responsibilities



Session Facilitation:



Organise and lead Men in Sheds activities, ensuring tools and materials are available and safe to use alongside volunteers. Plan with Volunteers and lead a weekly walking session suitable for varying abilities.

Participant Support:



Welcome and engage participants, fostering a friendly and non-judgmental atmosphere. Encourage social interaction and peer support among group members. Monitor participants' well-being and escalate concerns to the appropriate staff when necessary. Co-ordinating and supervising volunteers where appropriate. Taking responsibility for First Aid and Health & Safety whilst running the groups. Undertaking training relevant to the work. Ensuring the safety of people by adopting correct health and safety procedures. Managing the Marketing of the group by way of producing posters and distributing them in the local community. Engaging in local communities and supporting people to use our service.

Safety & Compliance:



Comply with all Risk assessments for activities and walking routes. Ensure health and safety standards are maintained at all times.

Administration:



Keep attendance records and provide feedback to the project coordinator. Assist with promotion of sessions through local networks and social media (if applicable).

Skills & Experience



Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to lead group activities and motivate participants. Basic DIY or woodworking skills (for Men in Sheds). Knowledge of local walking routes and ability to adapt for accessibility. Understanding of mental health issues and empathy towards participants. First Aid training (or willingness to undertake training). Good sense of humour. Support all other sessions/services if needed.
