The Mentor / Trainer provides high-quality teaching, coaching, and mentoring support to apprentices enrolled on the
Teaching Assistant (Level 3), Specialist Teaching Assistant (Level 5), Teaching Assistant with PE (Level 3), and School Sports Coach (Level 4) programmes.
This role is ideal for an experienced Teaching Assistant or Sports Coach who is passionate about developing others in the education sector. The Mentor / Trainer will guide learners to excel in classroom support, pupil engagement, and physical education delivery, ensuring they meet the standards expected of high-quality support professionals in schools.
The post holder will deliver engaging, sector-relevant learning experiences and provide individualised mentoring to ensure learners achieve their apprenticeship and professional potential.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Teaching, Coaching & Mentoring
Deliver engaging 1:1 and group teaching sessions in line with the apprenticeship standards.
Mentor learners to develop skills in classroom support, pupil development, inclusion, and physical education delivery.
Support learners in applying theoretical knowledge to real school settings through reflective learning and practical application.
Model best practice in communication, safeguarding, and behaviour management.
Assessment and Review:
Conduct formative and summative assessments, skills scans, and tripartite reviews.
Ensure all assessment decisions are valid, fair, consistent, and supported by robust learner evidence.
Maintain compliance with ESFA funding and quality assurance requirements.
Curriculum & Delivery
Deliver training sessions across multiple education-related standards (TA3, STA5, TA+PE3, and Sports Coach L4).
Contribute to the development of schemes of work and lesson plans that align with the Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
Support learners in achieving English and maths requirements, where applicable.
Learner Support
Motivate learners to achieve and exceed milestones and deadlines.
Identify additional learning needs or barriers to progress and implement appropriate support.
Provide pastoral support to ensure learner wellbeing and engagement.
Administrative and Compliance Tasks
Maintain accurate learner records, reviews, and evidence in the learner management system (Bud).
Ensure timely completion of tripartite reviews and progress documentation.
Prepare evidence for internal quality assurance and external audit readiness.
Person Specification
Essential
Proven experience working as a Teaching Assistant, Sports Coach, or in a school-based education support role.
Qualified Assessor Award (e.g., Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement - CAVA or equivalent).
Ability to deliver and assess apprenticeships aligned with TA3, TA+PE3, and STA5 standards.
Strong understanding of safeguarding, inclusion, and behaviour management.
Excellent interpersonal, coaching, and communication skills.
Ability to motivate and inspire learners from diverse backgrounds.
Desirable
Teaching qualification (e.g., AET Level 3 or higher).
Experience delivering Sports Coaching or Physical Education programmes in schools.
Sector qualification in
Teaching Support, PE, Coaching, or Education

Familiarity with digital learning platforms (e.g., Bud or OneFile).
Knowledge of ESFA apprenticeship compliance and Ofsted EIF expectations.
