We are a growing charity devoted to bettering the welfare and circumstance of visually impaired people throughout Northamptonshire. We have 3 hard-working teams that approach their work with humour, fun and compassion for each other and the individuals that we encounter.

This role will see you join our Marketing, Communications and Fundraising team, as a part of our stimulating and varied working environment. Our inclusive team often works on projects involving engagement and collaboration with other organisations, including events, promotions and training talks.

Mobile Sight Centre Officer



This broad role will see you independently travel across the county to a breadth of different functions on our mobile sight centre; public events, our social groups, town centres and local villages, where you will function as a vital network for the charity, between fundraisers, service users and colleagues, and becoming a staple of the communities that you visit.

You will provide advice, information and guidance to those experiencing visual impairment, and outreach to other members of the community you visit to nurture support for the charity and build awareness about living with sight loss.

JOB PURPOSE:

Promote the charity and provide information, advice and the opportunity to purchase specialist aids and equipment people with sight loss, their carers and others, by driving the Mobile Sight Centre (MSC) vehicle to pre-arranged locations across the county and, once at the location, opening and staffing the MSC.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES



1. Manage, operate and drive the MSC vehicle to pre-arranged locations throughout the county, to include such things as:

ensuring the vehicle is kept clean and tidy throughout and only used when roadworthy carrying out all recommended daily vehicle checks and maintenance tasks arranging for the vehicle to be serviced and maintained in accordance with the manufactures recommendations and, where necessary, likewise repaired driving and parking the vehicle in a courteous, professional and safe manner, one that reflects well on the charity and ensures the safety of visitors to the MSC and public
2. When safely parked; open, close and operate the MSC in such a way as to ensure visitors receive a first class, warm, friendly and supportive service that meets their individual needs and enhances the charity's reputation, to include such things as:

demonstrating and selling specialist aids and equipment, ensuring at all times that any purchases are appropriate to the customer's needs providing constructive advice and information to blind and partially sighted people and others on a range of issues associated with living with a visual impairment and, where appropriate, proactively referring them on to the charity's other services promoting the work of the charity and, when using the vehicle to support the charity's marketing and fundraising activities, participating in such activities delivering promotional/awareness raising information sessions/talks about NAB
3. Carry out a range of administrative, support and research tasks and keep such records as may be required to operate and maintain the MSC service, to include such things as:

obtaining/renewing any licences and permissions needed to park-up and operate the MSC at a given location, date and time helping in the production and delivery of MSC promotional material and in the identification of suitable locations for the MSC to visit monitoring MSC stock and, as necessary, replenishing stock from Head Office supplies logging MSC visitor numbers, purpose of visit and aids/equipment sales minor repairs to fittings and fixtures within the MSC
4. Undertake any other reasonable duties which may be required from time to time.

Person Specification



Essential



Ability to:

Safely and effectively drive, manoeuvre and operate the MSC vehicle, both on and off the road e.g. in car parks, pedestrianised town centres and the like. Communicate and work effectively with people of all ages and abilities. Empathise with people of all abilities whilst supporting them and building their confidence. Provide first class customer service and maintain an appropriate environment within the MSC, one that meets the needs of visitors and ensures their safety. Build rapport with a wide range of individuals and organisations, for example, to secure permission for us to park the MSC vehicle in their car park or on their land. Self-manage with a flexible yet organised approach to work and your place of work (the MSC). Act with absolute integrity and maintain personal, commercial and professional confidences. Talk confidently and knowledgably to people about the MSC and wider charity. Demonstrate and sell aids and equipment associated with helping people with sight loss whilst ensuring that any items sold are appropriate to their needs. Work within the charity's financial, administrative & procurement policies/procedures. Use Microsoft Office products e.g. compose, send and receive emails; write letters on Word and keep records of visitor number etc. on Excel. Keep the MSC well stocked, clean, tidy and always in a condition that reflects well on you and the charity and provides a safe environment for visitors. Help and support people with limited mobility and/or sight enter and leave the MSC.
Plus:

Physically fit, able to lift and carry reasonably heavy objects e.g. removing and replacing bollards, to re-stock the vehicle, extend the advertising board and awning etc. Aptitude for DIY and housekeeping so that you can, for example, fix minor issues with the vehicle or fittings within the MSC body, carry out daily vehicle checks, operate the vehicle's ancillary fittings such as the awning and stabilizers and keep the MSC clean and tidy. Confident, outgoing personality, comfortable with being the sole driver/operator of the MSC. Commitment to equal opportunities, anti-discriminatory practice & personal empowerment. Desirable



Personal knowledge and/or experience of:

Helping and supporting people with a sensory impairment. Aids and equipment designed to assist people with sight loss. Driving and operating a similar type of vehicle. Providing information and advice to people on the availability of support services that might be able to help them with the issues they face. Promoting a service to potential users of that service and the public.
