Job summary
The Government Actuary's Department (GAD) is a well-established organisation in the heart of government which uses statistical analysis and probabilistic financial models to assess a wide range of risks facing the public sector. Using these techniques, we aim to unlock value in our core work and make impact on policy by providing expert advice to government departments in areas including contingent risks, insurance, pensions, and social security.
The Analytical Solutions Team (AST) comprises around 80 analysts and actuaries and works across a wide and growing range of analytical areas including social security, funded and unfunded pensions, insurance provisioning, as well as bespoke analysis, production processes and model building for Government. The team is organised into a set of functional areas - an organisational structure which divides team activities into specific roles with distinct responsibilities.
As a Model Quality Assurance analyst you will help to deliver model quality assurance project for a variety of clients, reducing risk and strengthening trust in analytical models that inform major government decision, whilst supporting best practice and capability across the department.

You will be part of the

team. Our mission is to deliver high-quality models and systems that help government make better decisions. Within this team, the
Model Quality Assurance
sub-function focuses on building trust in model-based decisions. We do this by helping our clients reduce the risks linked to model errors, poor design, weak governance, or inappropriate use -- and by supporting them to meet their accountability obligations.
Our model assurance work has grown rapidly in recent years. We are now looking for a proactive and detail-focused Model Quality Assurance Analyst to help us review and oversee a wide range of statistical, analytical, and machine learning models. These models often underpin major policy, operational, and strategic decisions across government, so they must be robust, ethical, and fit for purpose.
You will work in a cross-disciplinary team of analysts to deliver and improve our Model QA service. Reporting to a Grade 7 Model QA Lead, you will evaluate model documentation and QA arrangements, test model logic and performance, contribute to governance and decision-making processes, and help build modelling skills and a strong assurance culture across the department.
Person specification
You will work collaboratively with your team and a variety of stakeholders to:
Conduct quality assurance of models developed by analysts, data scientists, or policy teams in other organisations - including reviewing model design, inputs, assumptions, testing approaches, documentation, and governance.
Carry out
model verification and validation
depending on the scope provided. This means checking that a model has been built correctly (verification) and making sure it works as intended in the real world (validation).
Prepare and present findings from QA reviews to internal stakeholders. Including preparing concise, clear, and accessible reports and other deliverables that summarise key risks, recommendations, and assurance outcomes.
Support the application of relevant government modelling and assurance standards (e.g. AQuA book).
Engage with client leads to help define and agree the appropriate scope for model QA projects, ensuring delivery is well-planned and executed within agreed budgets and timelines.
Assist in maintaining a central model quality assurance inventory (for case studies) and tracking assurance activities.
Help improve QA templates, guidance, and tools to ensure consistency and good practice.
Contribute to building awareness and capability in model QA through internal training, briefings, or mentoring.
Mentor less experienced colleagues within your team.
Be committed to your own development through the effective use of your personal development plan.
