The Role
The Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring high equipment availability and plant reliability by performing mechanical, electrical and automation maintenance activities across pellet production lines, biomass handling systems, wax dosing operations, utilities and power generation assets - including CHP and ORC turbine systems.
The role requires effective communication and close teamwork with operations, engineering and contractors to minimise downtime and maintain safe, efficient plant performance.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Mechanical & Electrical Maintenance
Diagnose, repair, and maintain mechanical systems including but not limited to conveyors, pellet mills, hammer mills, fans, rotary valves, dryers, briquette presses, and wax injection equipment.
Perform electrical troubleshooting on motors, control panels, sensors, VFDs, MCCs, and instrumentation.
Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive works on production and utility systems.
Conduct alignment, tensioning, bearing replacement, gearbox inspections, lubrication, and hydraulic/pneumatic system maintenance.
Communicate clearly with operations teams before, during, and after maintenance activities to ensure safe handovers and minimal production disruption.
2. Automation & Controls Support
Assist with basic PLC diagnostics, I/O checks, sensor calibration, and fault-finding on Siemens and Allen-Bradley-based systems.
Monitor HMI alarms, interpret fault codes, and support controls specialists during breakdowns and plant upgrades.
Work collaboratively with automation engineers and operators to restore plant operation efficiently and safely.
Maintain VFD and servo drive parameters and perform equipment resets in line with site procedures.
3. CHP Support
Perform maintenance on pumps, heat exchangers, combustion equipment, and fuel feed systems.
Assist in monitoring heat recovery equipment and lubrication systems.
Communicate operating concerns and defects to the wider engineering and ops teams.
4. Reliability & Continuous Improvement
Identify recurring faults and propose improvements to reduce downtime and improve equipment lifespan.
Participate in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities, contributing technical insight and practical solutions.
Work as part of a cross-functional team to improve pellet press throughput, drying efficiency, wax dosing performance, and turbine output.
5. CMMS & Documentation
Accurately record maintenance tasks, findings, labour hours, and parts usage in the Fiix CMMS.
Maintain clear, concise maintenance records to support team knowledge-sharing and long-term asset reliability.
Follow job plans, risk assessments, and maintenance procedures, providing feedback to improve documentation quality.
6. Safety, Communication & Teamwork
Perform all work in compliance with site safety standards, LOTO procedures, ATEX regulations, and electrical safety rules.
Actively participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, audits, and improvement initiatives.
Promote a positive team culture by supporting colleagues, sharing technical knowledge, and communicating hazards, defects, and lessons learned.
Maintain high housekeeping standards and encourage safe working practices across the site.
Skills & Experience Required:
Time-served apprenticeship in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Maintenance Engineering.
3-7 years' experience as a maintenance engineer in a manufacturing or continuous process environment.
Experience in wood processing, pellet plants, biomass energy plants, or heavy industrial operations is desirable.
Strong working knowledge of mechanical and electrical maintenance techniques.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and P&IDs.
Familiarity with industrial equipment including pellet mills, air handling systems, conveyors, and wax dosing systems.
