Dearing Plastics Ltd established in 1986 is a well respected trade moulder of injection moulded plastics with customers who supply global and domestic markets. Our machine capability ranges from 50t to 830t with 24 machines. In a 42000 sq ft factory based on an Enterprise Park in rural area with a train station only 10 minutes walk from the site. Currently employing 45 staff on a 3 shift basis we are looking to develop our support team of trained engineers who enjoy problem solving and have a commitment to quality work.
Job Overview:
The Electrically Biased Maintenance Technician is responsible for the maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair of electrical systems, injection moulding machines, mould tooling, and associated plant equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable manufacturing operations.
The role requires a strong electrical background combined with mechanical skills to support a wide range of automated production equipment. A focus on minimising downtime, improving machine performance, and ensuring the continuous operation of plant machinery is critical.
The technician will actively participate in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) activities, Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives, and process optimisations. Typical responsibilities include fault-finding on electrical panels, PLC diagnostics, sensor replacements, inverter drive adjustments, and mechanical support on moulding tools and auxiliary equipment.
Close collaboration with Production, Engineering, and Tool Room teams is essential to maintain process stability, safety, and product quality.
Key Responsibilities:
Perform electrical and mechanical fault-finding, repair, and maintenance on injection moulding machines, tooling, robotics, and auxiliary plant equipment.
Carry out preventive and predictive maintenance in line with TPM schedules.
Diagnose faults on electrical control systems, including sensors, relays, contactors, safety circuits, and inverter drives.
Support PLC fault diagnosis and minor programming adjustments (Siemens, Allen Bradley or equivalent).
Conduct maintenance and minor repairs on mould tooling and associated handling equipment.
Liaise with production staff to prioritise maintenance work in response to operational needs.
Assist in the installation, commissioning, and modification of new and existing machinery.
Maintain clear, detailed records of maintenance tasks, faults, repairs, and modifications using CMMS.
Contribute to Continuous Improvement projects and identify opportunities for increased machine reliability, energy efficiency, and productivity.
Ensure all tasks are carried out in accordance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) standards and site policies.
Maintain a clean, tidy, and organised working environment, including safe storage of tools and parts.
Key Requirements:
Recognised qualification in Electrical Engineering (e.g., NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC, or equivalent).
Additional mechanical maintenance knowledge preferred (hydraulics, pneumatics, mechanical fitting).
Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical schematics, circuit diagrams, and machine manuals.
Experience working on injection moulding machines and mould tooling preferred.
Competence in PLC fault-finding (e.g., Siemens, Allen Bradley), sensors, drives, and industrial control systems.
Understanding and practical application of TPM and Continuous Improvement principles.
Computer literacy (CMMS systems, MS Office).
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
